Honestly, I’m not sure, and I don’t think I’m a good judge of this question myself. Some options are Shun from Shin Sekai Yori, Seishin Muroi from Shiki, Shinichi Izumi from Kiseijuu/Parasyte, Gabriel from Gabriel Dropout, Yajiro from Eccentric Family, Sayaka Miki from Madoka Magica, Sophita from Casshern Sins, Suzaku from Code Geass, Kirigiri from Danganronpa, Lucy from Elfin Lied, Shion Sonozaki from the Higurashi series, Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul, Aoyama from Pet Girl of Sakurasou, Griffith from Berserk 1997, Ciel from Black Butler, Cal from Phantom, Yomi from Ga Rei Zero, Chrona from Soul Eater, Satou from Welcome to the NHK, Armin from Attack on Titan, Moeka from Steins;Gate, and Zero Two from Darling in the Franxx.

Those characters are nothing alike, you may be thinking. Well, I have mood swings and no stable, lasting sense of identity, so I can be any of those types. The characters I listed can be divided into four types: the smart and/or thoughtful ones (Shun), the nervous wrecks (Kaneki), the ones who gave up and/or died and/or turned evil because of despair (Sayaka), and the ones who lash out at others and are dangerous (Zero Two). There’s some overlap of those types, too, and many of them meet tragic ends. A few of them are very unpopular (Moeka) or would be in real life (Satou).

Bottom line, I must choose one character or I can’t move on with the challenge on good conscience. So I’ve decided to pick the one who I’m probably most like on this particular day (this was written on Jun 4th). So I’ll go with Yajiro Shimogamo, a character you might not be familiar with.

He is a frog who lives in a well in the anime Eccentric Family. Well, technically, he’s a shapeshifting tanuki, but he’s been in frog form for so long that it’s very difficult for him to shapeshift anymore. For certain reasons I won’t spoil, Yajiro decided to live in the well, away from the vast outside world, doing nothing but living life as a very pensive frog. He occasionally interacts with people and yokai who come to the well to make wishes, and this has given him a lot of insight. The well is on Shimogamo property, so family members come to visit and talk sometimes, too.

So why is this character like me? Yajiro has an older brother and two younger brothers who outshine him; I have an older sister and two younger sisters who outshine me. I don’t resent them; I’m happy to talk to them and give them my thoughtful and usually melancholy perspective. That’s the same way Yajiro is with his brothers. I don’t go out much, and Yajiro rarely leaves the well. I seldom feel lonely, I like being by myself, and I don’t have the confidence or motivation to make anything more of my life (at this point). Yajiro is the same. We are currently content being frogs alone in a well. There is no real “life” to our lives, but right now, that’s ok.

Looking at my life as a whole, I don’t know which character I am most similar to. Maybe Cal, Lucy, Sayaka, or Sophita. Today, though, I am Yajiro Shimogamo.
