Sunday Select: 7 Favorite Anime of 2017

Hi and welcome everyone! For this list, I’m tired of playing favorites, so I’ll just order them alphabetically. Movies, OVAs, and continuing series are not included in these entries. Note: I once made a top ten post for 2017 anime, but it’s buried down at the bottom, and I needed to whittle it down to 7 anyway. Apologies for any confusion. Now let’s look at my favorite 2017 anime.

Fate/Apocrypha

Another version of the Fate/Type Moon universe, Apocrypha changes up the usual Grail War system. Seven masters and their summoned servants are aligned with Red and set to fight against seven more mages and their servants aligned with Black. While it’s widely criticized for not being high-budget like other Fate productions, Apocrypha is an enjoyable series worth a watch for anyone who cares about more than appearances. This series aired in summer 2017 and was made by A-1 pictures.

Gabriel Dropout

Aired in Winter 2017 by studio Doga Kobo, Gabriel Dropout is a light comedy slice-of-life show focused on the fallen angel Gabriel. I adore this show because I am have the same personality as Gab. The other characters are hilarious too. There’s the unforgettable Satania, a young demon girl who has absurd dreams of conquest but can’t even win small victories. Don’t forget Vignette, the mature demon who is actually much more angelic than Gabriel, and struggles with being a Demon at all. In turn, Raphiel the angel is devilish as can be. Watching the whole series too quickly makes you get a bit sick of it, but definitely watch a few episodes to get the idea!

Made in Abyss

Made in Abyss is probably the best anime of 2017. It aired in summer and was made by Kinema Citrus. There is a rich fantasy universe revolving around the Abyss, an enormous hole in the earth with a whole world of its own to be found within. Riko journeys into the Abyss to find her mother and for the sake of adventure itself. With her is Reg, a mysterious being similar to a robot, whose origins are unknown. There’s plenty of adventure, wonder, and beauty in this series as well as suspense, darkness, and pain.

Mahoutsukai no Yome (The Ancient Magus’ Bride)

The general reception of Mahoutsukai no Yome is positive, and the score on Mal in 8.13 currently. However, I’ve heard several critics and reviewers, including some I admire, balk at this show simply because it’s unusual and there are some ethical dilemmas. It irritates me that many of these same people enjoy shows like Fate/Zero. Maybe they just don’t like romance. Anyway, Magus Bride is a personal favorite of mine, and you’ll like it if you are interested in magic, fantasy creatures, fascinating characters, and a unique character relationships. This series aired in Fall 2017 and was animated by Wit Studio

Miss Kobayahi’s Dragon Maid

This series is funny, wholesome, colorful, and charming. I recommend it to all anime fans, including new fans. It’s not a bad way to be introduced to anime. The story focuses on Tohru, a dragon who can take human form, and her dedication to serving and loving Miss Kobayashi as a maid, a friend, and maybe something more. Kobayashi is great as well, and a lot of adults can relate to her. Dragon Maid aired in Winter 2017 and was produced by Kyoto Animation.

Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2

In Spring 2017, Wit Studio finally released the anticipated second season of Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan. It seemed a bit cheaper in appearances than expected, but I don’t mind that, and most fans agree. It was still an excellent season of a masterpiece anime series. More and more secrets and mysteries rise to the surface as the fight against the titans continues. Who else among the soldiers is a titan in hiding?

Youjo Senki (Saga of Tanya The Evil)

I love this show but I haven’t seen the movie yet. Tanya isn’t evil in my opinion; this was just the perception of the religious western world. At the very least, she’s much less evil than Being X, who is manipulating humans and their war technology, with godlike powers and staggering arrogance. Tanya is a soldier girl who was a rather cold-hearted salary man in the previous life. Now it has become an isekai, where she is forced into war again and again. Yojou Senki (which actually means “little girl war chronicles” aired in Winter 2017. It was made by studio Nut.

Thanks for looking at my list today. I really appreciate it! Be safe and stay awesome.

  1. The Ancient Magus’ Bride was one of my faves until one of the later episodes. Watching that one was sooo difficult and it bumped it from being a favourite for the year. With that said, I still think it’s beautiful with a very interesting story. SnK season 2 made me frustrated but I loved season 3! I need to watch these others ones. Those are the only two I’ve seen haha.
