Do you like the idea of conventionally attractive, rich, aristocratic vampires? What about a unique kind of lore that poses a vampire god as the existence that controls the species? Throw in a few adorable vampire children and some surprisingly realistic family drama and you have Delico’s Nursery.
Welcome to Anime Rants! Delico’s Nursery was a Summer 2024 anime that suffered through scheduling issues and delays. As a result, it only aired for 6 episodes in Summer. Now that Fall 2024 season is in full swing, Delico’s Nursery has returned. It’s available on Crunchyroll with a premium membership, and new episodes are posted on Wednesdays. I’m a bit late, but here are my reviews for Delico’s Nursery episodes 7 and 8!

Episode 7: Battle Amidst Flames
Episode Rating: 8/10
Throughout the first half of the episode especially, there was plenty of action. I was a little worried about returning to this series and starting on a boring episode, but this installment kept me entertained with the fight scenes. The visuals for the combat sequences were nothing spectacular like you would see in, say, Demon Slayer. But they were more than adequate for a series that isn’t an action anime at all. Outside of the fighting scenes, the visuals are great because the style is so unusual. It won’t be everybody’s cup of tea, but I’m enjoying it a lot.

Other enjoyable aspects of this episode were the personalities and interpersonal dynamics of the bad-guys at Pendulum. They are one-dimensional perhaps, but they may prove more interesting with time. In the meanwhile, they are moderately interesting. Kiki is probably my favorite. It was awesome how she broke through the floor in Delico’s estate instead of just using the stairs and the door. I like the “insanely strong little girl” trope.

Additionally, I am pleased with the character of Catarina so far. It would be better if the obviously queer character wasn’t aligned with the bad-guys all the time. But if you can swallow that, Catarina is very entertaining. I think they might be a trans woman, but since I’m not sure, I’ll use “they/them” pronouns. Catarina’s motivations for joining Pendulum are unknown, but I highly doubt they can justify murdering civilians for any reason. At the end of the day, despite their jovial nature, they are a violent criminal.

The seventh episode taught us about dhampirs, which are half-breeds: part vampire and part human. I know this might be dumb, but technically, isn’t this the first confirmation that humans exist in this world? I was starting to think that only the vamps existed as the dominant humanoid. By the way, if you’re like me and you had never heard of dhampirs, they are widespread in European folklore and have even been used a creature in Dungeons and Dragons. The word originates from Albania.

Anyway, now that we know there are humans in this world, I have more questions than ever. How do you tell which are vampires and which are humans? Do they coexist in this society, or do the vampires rule over the humans? Or do they keep their societies entirely separate? Long story short, there’s still a lot we don’t know. We seriously need more world-building in this series. (I want to know about the food and drinks, too – apparently some vampires enjoy coffee.)

As things stand, Dali has been wounded by Pendulum, who also took the children and Lord Johannes hostage. Johannes has one week to reveal information about the True of Vamp. If he refuses, Pendulum will begin killing the children in front of him. I like Johannes and the advice he gave to Theodore earlier in the episode. So, I hope he can be rescued soon. In the meantime, Kiki and Catarina are making sure no harm comes to the children. To be continued.

Episode 8: Thus Spoke Juras
Episode Rating: 8/10
Kiki, Abraham, and Catarina spend time with the captive kids. They even bought some toys and things to climb on for the children. It’s quite strange behavior for a group that claims it will kill the kids if needed. But based on how ferociously Kiki protected Theodore in this episode, I don’t think she would ever allow Juras to murder one of the youngsters. She would try to save them first, and Abraham would be on her side.

Delico and the others at the Vlad Agency conduct research to find out the identity of the dhampir. Kate helps the men with the investigation. Meanwhile, Catarina tells Kiki what they know about Juras. Viewers get to see Juras’ backstory in full as Catarina describes the suffering he went through. The basic story is that Juras the dhampir wants revenge on the vampire god (TRUMP) for destroying his home and slaughtering his people.

Since he was born as a dhampir, Juras was a social outcast from day one. Vampires and humans both tend to shun half-breeds. An orphan dhampir on the streets, he probably would have starved if he hadn’t been rescued by a kind girl. She took him to live in Nebula, a village inhabited solely by dhampirs. Juras enjoyed a peaceful life there until TRUMP descended onto the town and made everyone kill each other. Only a handful of dhampirs survived, including Juras, who was covered from head to toe in burns.

The visuals for this episode were not great, but I still love the unique style. The music was also really awesome, especially the sad female vocals that played when Nebula was burning down. Aside from music, I love several of the character designs. Delico and the other main dudes are all hot. I can’t get over how sexy and beautiful Catarina is in this episode. Keith is also attractive in a “omg he might kill me” sort of way. Don’t get me started on the hotness of Kate Lorca. Lots of good-looking characters to go around!

The episode ends with Dali, Henrique, Dino, and Gerhard investigating the survivors of Nebula. They go to a rural house to talk to one of the other survivors – a relatively young dhampir boy who was taken in by a human. Hopefully this interaction will teach us more about the dynamics between humans and vampires in this world. If you’re watching this show and you have thoughts on how you think the society works, please let me know your theories in the comments. 🙂

I think Catarina is a trans woman also, so to me, they/them is correct.

Hey, thanks for the comment. I’m pretty sure she/her would be the default for a binary trans woman. But since we don’t know for sure, they/them is safest.
