Episode 9: The Battle of Gray Cat Town

Episode Rating: 8/10

I was impressed with this episode mostly due to the awesome music, good voice-acting, and the emotional scene in the last few minutes (when the parents and children were reunited). I’m not going to recap the whole episode, but I have a few notes to jot down that seem significant. When we last left off, Dali and company were visiting a human and his adopted son Banri to question them about Nebula village.

(Banri)

Banri knew Juras in Nebula village, except his name was Shad back then. Shad was apparently a little full of himself and very fixated on Rosa. Some time after the village was destroyed, Shad/Juras came to see Banri and offered to help him in times of need, since they were the last two survivors of Nebula. That’s when Banri heard that Shad would be staying in Gray Cat Town. Though he is a vampire hunter in training, Banri was eventually persuaded to share this information with Dali and the others.

(Banri and Shad/Juras)

This encounter also provided important information on how vamps and humans interact. There is apparently some kind of treaty that prevents vamps from contacting humans, but Dali and company broke it in order to save their children. There are still many unanswered questions, like whether humans have their own country, and why some humans are permitted to be vamp hunters. Still, every little bit helps when it comes to information about this world.

Different humans react in different ways to the civilized vampires that – as far as we know – don’t hunt innocent humans. Banri was openly hostile to vamps, but also level-headed enough to not make a scene when outnumbered by vamps. Banri’s father, on the other hand, seems to understand that there are good and bad vamps, that Dali is on the good side, and that Shad is siding with the evil ones. Interesting indeed.

(Banri and his father)

It’s been a week, so Keith and Juras prepare to kill the captive children to make Lord Johannes talk. Kiki tries to protect the kids, enlisting Abraham’s help, and a fight breaks out. Catarina didn’t really take a side. Just when Keith was again ready to kill one of the kids, Lord Johannes declared that the vampire god is at the Clan. At that moment, Dali and his friends arrived, breaking into the hideout in Gray Cat Town.

(Kiki saves the kids!)

There were some brief combat scenes. In the end, Kiki was captured, Abraham and Keith were defeated, and Juras escaped with Lord Johannes. Catarina disappeared, but the end of the episode revealed that she’s going after Dali’s family – baby Ul and the nanny that cares for him. All the children are safe, and Theodore even helped beat Keith by stabbing his leg. These kids are surprisingly brave.

(Theodore attacks!)

The scene where the vamp parents reunite with their kids was so sweet. I know I’m extra emotional lately, but this scene made my eyes well up with little tears. When Gerhard hugged Angelico and told him, “Well done, my son,” I melted. The same thing happened when Dino awkwardly invited Theodore to hug him, picking him up and holding him like a baby while he shed some cathartic tears. This episode was quite touching. Now we just to save baby Ul and Johannes.

Episode 10: How To Kill God

Episode Rating: 8/10

The OST pieces in this installment contintued to be awesome and memorable. I also love the face expressions and the unusual art style of this anime. Now let’s go over what happened in this episode. Juras and Catarina kidnapped baby Ul. The nanny, Clara, insisted on going with them to care for the baby and keep him calm. In addition to the two new hostages, Juras is still holding Lord Johannes captive.

(Clara is determined to protect the baby)

The masked villain explains how he plans to kill the vampire god, Trump. It’s supposedly impossible to kill the body of that immortal creature. However, Juras has the ability to enter the minds of others and destroy them from within. He can essentially “kill” the psyche of Trump, leaving him a brainless hunk of flesh for eternity. Juras originally had this ability during his cocoon phase, but with the help of drugs, he can achieve the effect once more.

(Juras’ power is activated by touch)

There was an interesting conversation between Clara and Catarina. Clara remarks that Catarina is surprisingly kind for a murderer-kidnapper, which prompts a discussion about Catarina’s motivations and history in Pendulum. (I’m assuming Catarina is a trans woman, so I refer to her with “she” pronouns.) She seems to have formed a bond with Juras after training him in basic combat skills. Clara and Catarina also talk about Juras and how he’s always be in pain both physically and emotionally.

(Catarina is so pretty~)

This discussion made me sympathize with Juras somewhat. However, there’s something I don’t understand about his character. Why does he act like Rosa did nothing wrong? He wants revenge on the vampire god for massacring the town, but it was actually Rosa who initiated the violence in Nebula Village. Juras should understand this. He should know that Rosa was always selfish and willing to sacrifice others for her own glorified suicide. Why does Juras seem so blind to this? I suppose he’s in a state of denial.

(Juras minus the mask)

We’ll leave that aside for now. With the knowledge that Trump is a teacher at the Clan – basically vampire school – Juras plans his next move. He will make Lord Johannes attend the upcoming Clan Festival, where outsiders are allowed into the school. Juras and Catarina will disguise as his servants. Meanwhile, Dali and his companions also plan to attend the Clan Festival. They know it’s their best chance to catch Juras and save the hostages. Before long, the day arrives. The vampire aristocrats all look dazzling in their fancy suits on the day of the Festival.

(Hot vampires alert!)

When it was time to leave for the Festival, little Lucia and Elena made a fuss about wanting to go with their papa. Theodore calmed them down and convinced them to play with him instead. Dino is clearly proud of his young son, and tells him to take care of the nursery. (Kate is also there to supervise.) It’s great to see Theodore confident and happy. To make things even better, his cocoon hallucinations have stopped. He is completely stable. And that’s a good note to end on.

(Adorable Theodore)
