There are any number of ways to ruin a final episode of a short anime series. By comparison, there are fewer possible “good endings” that will be widely acceptable – especially if you also need to leave room for a sequel. In my opinion, Delico’s Nursery managed to not completely ruin its last episode. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad either. You can read the rest of my thoughts in the following episode recap/review.
Episode 13: Goodbye, Nursery
Episode Rating: 8/10
The first half of the episode showed us some glimpses into the future, wherein Dali’s children and their companions have just become legal adults. Ul has completed his time at the Clan and outgrew his cocoon phase, and since he’s the youngest, it means everyone is grown-up now. Everyone meets up at the train station. From there, they go to eat a nice meal together to celebrate Ul’s graduation.

Lucia and Elena look lovely in their gowns, and are still as cheeky as ever. Raphael and Angelico are strapping young men and best friends. Theodore is downright hot. And Ul still looks a bit teenager-ish. (Note: Ul’s friend Sophia is also with the group, having developed a close bond with Ul during their time at the Clan.) The new generation of vamps live happy lives, and eventually, Raphael marries a woman who gives birth to Dali’s first grandson. From here, the episode switches back to the present, where Raphael and the others are still little kids.

The Delico family and Gerhard go to visit Frida’s grave. It’s a serious and slightly gloomy scene until Raphael surprises everyone and says he’s going to become an even bigger deal than this rich and famous father. His motivation is to protect Ul at all costs. It’s so cute and wholesome to see Raphael being a loving big brother. After this scene, Dali meets all the other fathers and kids from the nursery, and they have a picnic. I’ll go back to the picnic a little later, but first – there’s one other major event to mention.

Kiki, Katarina, and Abraham were being shipped off to a prison in a guarded carriage. However, someone other than the Vlad Agency seems to have stopped them and captured them. The person behind it – a gray-haired man – seems to be a leader of a religious organization that wants to make life joyful for their god, the True of Vamp. The gray-haired man is hiring Kiki and her companions to help with a mysterious job designed to serve the vampire god. Kiki is interested in the new job, especially since it might lead her down the path of discovering an eternal cocoon phase.

It seems like season 2 is being strongly hinted. The narrative is definitely setting something up with Sophia Anderson. He is the baby that th gray-haired man is raising, and he grows up to be Ul’s best friend. The creators could also planning to involve Kiki and the other two survivors of Pendulum. (Note: Keith is technically alive, but in a vegetable state after Juras broke his mind.) This should definitely be enough setup for a second cour, which is a good thing for me. I enjoyed this anime enough to where I would tag along for a second season if I have sufficient time.

Now then, let’s go back to the picnic for a moment. The last few scenes of the episode show the families happily sharing food and getting along in a beautiful, grassy area. That’s all fine, but the actual ending was even more touching and wholesome. It showed baby Ul crawling around and standing up for his very first time. As Dali watches his youngest son learn to move around, you can tell his heart is swelling with pride and love. It’s a great ending for a show that focuses a lot on parenting of young children.

I was not exactly impressed with either this episode or this show, in the end. But I do wonder why Kiki suddenly started looking frightened when the new villain was talking about how they need the cocoon phase.
