Guild Receptionist Episodes 1 thru 3 Reviews

Greetings. Welcome to Anime Rants with Mono. Today we are covering the first three episodes of Guild Receptionist, a goofy and cute anime that I’ve been enjoying so far. The full title is I May be a Guild Receptionist, but I’ll Solo Any Boss to Clock out on Time (Guild no Uketsukejou desu ga, Zangyou wa Iya nanode Boss wo Solo Toubatsu Shiyou to Omoimasu). I will just call it Guild Receptionist for short. I have only a few notes for each episode, and I’m in a hurry, so this will be pretty brief.

Episode 1: I’m a Guild Receptionist, So I Want a Peaceful Life

Episode Rating: 8/10

I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode of Guild Receptionist. The general animation is simple but enjoyable, in a style with almost chibi proportions that I find endearing. The character designs are cute and cool – especially for Alina. As for the CGI monsters, they don’t look great, but I’ve seen so much worse in anime that this is easily acceptable for me. In addition to the cute and cool visuals, I also love the music so far, including the beautiful opening song.

(Alina being adorable)

I already mentioned that Alina is cute (both physically and in terms of mannerisms and speech). She is also a relatable female protagonist. Her voice is great too. One of the reasons I picked this anime was that Alina was voiced by Rie Takahashi, a truly talented seiyuu. She is known for a few memorable roles including Emilia from Re: Zero. Alina’s personality is quite dramatic and almost neurotic, but she’s a hard worker and excellent at dealing with customers. To me, that’s basically a super-power.

(Go get em, girl!)

Now, what about the main premise of the show? The idea is that Alina often finds herself doing overtime at work, and she absolutely hates it. Since she works at a guild dungeon, her job could be done more quickly if the adventurers would just hurry and beat the bosses. Eventually, Alina snapped and started slaying the bosses by herself in an attempt to avoid overtime. Ironically, despite being a normal office girl, she has incredible fighting power, blessed with a magic hammer from the gods. This humorous premise definitely appeals to me. I look forward to watching more.

(Alina suffering overtime at work)

This episode introduced us to the premise of the show and the fact that Alina has accidentally made a name for herself. She is known as The Executioner, a mysterious hooded adventurer that the public is dying to unmask. The Executioner has many fans, but only one man (so far) has been able to see her clearly enough to recognize her. That man is Jade Skrade, the leader of the Silver Sword Guild and quite a hot twink. He identifies Alina at work and tries to recruit her for the guild. I like Jade, but I also think Alina is justified in trying to shake him off. She just wants a peaceful life.

(Jade Skrade)

Episode 2: I May be the Executioner, But I’ll be Fired if People Find Out, so I’ll Have To Use Force

Episode Rating: 7/10

This episode showed us how Alina got her powers. She made a wish that she would be strong enough to never have to work overtime. This was after she missed a festival due to overtime and felt thoroughly depressed and frustrated. Funnily enough, the gods of that magical world heard her prayer and gave the magic hammer and superior physical abilities. I was thinking that Alina was an adventurer first before wanting to be a receptionist, but it was actually the other way around. She only became “The Executioner” to make her life easier as a Guild Receptionist.

The troublemaker from the guild office, Slay, went mad with anger and started rampaging around the city, riding on top of a monstrous dungeon boss. (He could control the beast with his magic skill). Slay wreaked havoc on the city and destroyed Alina’s house. When she found out about this, Alina donned her Executioner garb and furiously fought with him. She easily won the battle, and only the goodness of her heart kept her from literally crushing Slay with the hammer. Now without her precious house, Alina is devastated. She stays at an inn that night.

A few other things happened in this episode, like how Alina and Jade found a quest given by the mysterious relic. After that, Alina goes back to work and is approaced by a Silver Sword member named Glenn. He has a magic skill that let him identify Alina as The Executioner. Alina has no choice but to go to guild HQ and talk to him. Before meeting with Glenn inside, Alina makes sure to tell Jade that she hates him and blames him for exposing her – which, to his credit, he didn’t actually do. Once Alina is inside the headquarters, Glenn dramatically challenges her to a duel. To be continued.

Episode 3: I May Be The Silver Sword’s Tank, But I Want to Take On A Really Tough Dungeon

Episode Rating: 7/10

With her overpowered Dia Skill, Alina wins the duel with Glenn, who promised to leave her alone if she was victorious. However, he now wants her to help conquer a newly discovered dungeon with the Silver Sword. In exchange for Alina’s help, Glenn will double the number of receptionists at the guild office, making less work for Alina. Everything is arranged and the next day, Alina sets out with Jade the Tank, Lululee the Healer, and Lowe the Dark Mage. Together, they will explore the dungeon of Chalk Mountain.

(Lowe and Lululee)

It felt like a lot happened in this episode, and I don’t have time to go over everything. Long story short, the dungeon is inhabited by a Dark God named Silha who uses a Dia Skill similar to that of Alina. It seemed that Silha wiped out a party of Guild members led by a man named Rufus. In reality, however, Rufus was a scumbag who killed his own party members and laid a trap for Jade and the others to die as well. Anyway, since a strong party was all but slaugtered, Jade and company retreated for the day.

(Dark God Silha)

On the second excursion to the dungeon, Alina did not join the party. Jade, Lululee, Lowe, and Rufus ran into Silha, who attacked almost immediately. Rufus revealed that he was trying to sacrifice his companion’s souls to unseal the Dark God in excange for his own Dia Skill. Things don’t look good for Jade, but on the bright side, Silha killed Rufus and ate his soul. That’s one less scummy traitor to deal with. What an annoying bastard.

(Rufus)

Although the visuals were tame, it was rather surprising to see violent death and soul-devouring in what I thought was a comedy anime. It remains to be seen if this serious tone will continue. If it doesm I don’t think I’ll mind it – especially if the system of magic and gods is interesting. I’m always down for a more serious fantasy adventure as long as there are characters I like. And I do like Alina so far.

Speaking of Alina, this episode revealed the fact that she was traumatized by the death of a certain adventurer in the past. Back when she was a kid, Alina wanted to be an adventurer. She told the adventurer, Mr. Shroud, that she would become invincible and accompany him on his quests. The two of them pinky-promised. But sadly, Mr. Shroud was killed shortly afterward. Alina was devastated. In the present, she continues to have flashbacks and dreams about the traumatic event. Although this was sad, it’s good character writing that gives Alina more depth. That’s all for today.

~Thanks for reading~
