Re: Zero season 3 began airing in Fall 2024. Then there were delays or scheduling issues that caused it to be postponed until Winter 2025. In early February, the anime resumed. Obviously, I’m a little behind, but it’s finally time to cover the new episodes. To speed things up, I’ll try to tackle two episodes at a time. Today, we’ll review Re: Zero episodes 59 and 60 (AKA season 3 episodes 9 and 10).
The best thing about these episodes was the “yuri” that came out of nowhere. Priscilla and Liliana have strong sexual energy, though Liliana is more romantically interested in that businessman, Kiritaka. They were just messing around, but it was still good to see some non-hetero stuff happening. I wonder if the presence of lesbianism/bisexuality had anything to do with the “scheduling problems.” Knowing Japan, I wouldn’t be surprised. Anyway, let’s start digging into these episodes.
Episode 59: City Scramble
Episode Rating: 8/10
We’ll begin with a quick reminder of where where everyone is as the counterattack begins. Subaru and Reinhard were off to rescue Emilia, while Felt and her people went to fight the Arch-Bishop of Gluttony. Garf and Wilhelm went after Capella and the two cultists that guard her. Meanwhile, Liliana and Priscilla went to fight Sirius.

Before leaving to fight Sirius, Priscilla changed clothes. She saw fit to undress and redress in front of Liliana, whose reaction was completely relatable. She practically drooled over Priscilla, showing that she’s a raging bisexual. Like all the women in this anime, Priscilla was ridiculously hot. She’s built a lot like Emilia but with more chest and hips I think. Anyway, the sexually charged scene was interrupted by Anastasia, who wanted to discuss defending the stronghold while Priscilla was gone.

Priscilla was not kind to Anastasia, which I suppose is natural since they are rival contenders for the throne. In addition, Priscilla mentioned that Anastasia was keeping a secret. It has something to do with her knight, Julius. I don’t know more at this point.
Elsewhere, the fight was not going well for Wilhem’s group. Garf was getting his ass handed to him by the eight-armed swordsman. He was also having hallucinations of Elsa mocking him again. Wilhelm was holding his own, but he was startled when he saw the face of the cultist he was fighting. Just as he thought, it was his wife, Theresia.

Subaru and Reinhard also encountered problems in their mission. Regulus threatened to kill all the women (his “wives”) if Subaru and Reinhard did not listen to him. After Emilia attacked him, Regulus grabbed her by the neck and was close to killing her, too. Reinhard could not draw his magical sword because it would not acknowledge Regulus as a worthy opponent. Nevertheless, Reinhard stepped forward to try to reason with Regulus before it was too late.

Regulus made Reinhard stand there and take one hit from his magic. The blow looked fatal, a huge slice that opened the knight’s torso. In fact, Reinhard did temporarily die. But his Divine Blessing gave him the power of the Phoenix, so he resurrected quickly. (I wonder how many times he can use this power?) Reinhard made sure Emilia was free from the chokehold. Subaru also leapt into action. The fight with Regulus began.

In other news, Otto spoke briefly with Lye Batenkaitos, the Arch-Bishop of Gluttony. The clever merchant determined that there are at least two Bishops of Gluttony. I might be stupid. All this time, I thought there was only one Gluttony who had multiple personalities. Now it seems obvious that there are two or more individuals with separate bodies. Sorry if I misled anyone with this misunderstanding in my earlier posts.

The ending of this episode was lowkey terrifying. Capella’s shapeshifting ability is eerie and the transformation is physically repulsive. Felix was right to be scared out of his mind. What a way to end an episode!

Episode 60: The Plan to Conquer Greed
Episode Rating: 9/10
Felix was being psychologically tortured by the enemy intruder. Just before Capella could completely strangle Felix, Anastasia blasted the obnoxious little monster with intense light magic. She had been disguised as Crusch in the bed beside Felix, waiting for the perfect shot. Unfortunately, Capella regenerated in seconds. Aldebaran was there to help fight her. It’s time to finally see what he can do!

Meanwhile, Emilia, Subaru and Reinhard continued fighting Regulus and trying to determine how his invincibility power works. Nothing they do to him can even scratch him. I loved the part where Emilia made magic ice-skates for herself and Subaru as they slid down the frozen waterway. Although it caused no damage, it was still nice to see Emilia smacking the hell out of Regulus with ice weapons.

I love Emilia but even I sometimes wish she wasn’t so infantilized. I’m not sure if I like the fact that Emilia’s hatred for Regulus was framed as “cute.” Emilia has legitimate reason to hate this bastard, so I would prefer to see some lines where we are moved by her serious passion instead of entertained by her ditzy cuteness.
We all know Emilia is powerful, as she wields vast magic and might even be the incarnation of the Jealous Witch. So, why do we have to be beaten over the head with her cuteness all the time? Sometimes I forget there’s any substance or power to her character because she acts so dumb and pathetic most of the time.

Moving on, we come to the scene where Priscilla boldly – and with tongue – kissed Liliana. The two were facing off against Sirius, who immediately used her power to brainwash Liliana. Priscilla broke the psychic connection by giving Liliana the gayest kiss we’ve ever seen in Re: Zero. When the songstress asked what that was for, Priscilla said, “It brought you back to your senses and also brought you pleasure, didn’t it?” She seemed quite smug about it, and Liliana didn’t argue.

Sirius used her power on some townspeople, ordering them to fight for her. Priscilla sent a wall of raging flames toward the brainwashed people. She told Liliana to sing a song that would free the crowd from Sirius’ influence. While Liliana freaked out under the pressure to save the townsfolk, Priscilla faced Sirius. The representative of Wrath then said some cryptic words along the lines of, “Iris and the thorn king.” Whatever this meant, it sent Priscilla into a rage. She was being baited into rash attacks.

The episode went back to Subaru and company for its remaining run-time. With help from Emilia, Subaru realized something about Regulus’s power. He asked Reinhard to check whether Regulus’ heart was beating. The brave knight confirmed that there was no pulse. Regulus sent Reinhard flying away with a powerful throw. Now, it was up to Subaru and Emilia to fight Regulus.

Emilia launched an ice attack at Regulus, and when the dust cleared, only Subaru remained in plain sight. Emilia had seemingly vanished. Subaru confidently declared that he understood Regulus’ Authority (i.e. his invincibility power). Regulus was freezing time around his body. He was immortal because time stopped at his body. Further details remain to be seen, since the episode ended here. Thanks for reading!
