Dr. Stone: Science Future Episode 9 Review – Dr. Chrome

Thanks for visiting today. Chrome has always been one of my favorite characters in Dr. Stone. (My top favorites are Kohaku, Gen, and Francois, followed by Senku and Chrome.) Because he’s more human and flawed than Senku, I find Chrome easy to relate to. Like him, I love science and have a strong natural curiosity – though I’m more interested in animals than minerals, personally. In Dr. Stone: Science Future episode 9, Chrome takes up the important role of group scientist. Let’s review the episode.

Episode 9: Light of Science

Episode Rating: 8/10

The starch bag softened the bullet’s impact, but Senku was definitely down. At first, Taiju and the group feared that Senku was dead or dying, but he remained conscious for a few minutes before passing out. Apparently, the bullet had passed clean through him, so there was no need for surgery. But Senku was still at risk and had lost a lot of blood.

Francois was helpful in cleaning and bandaging Senku, but the real lifesaver was Luna. She had been a medical school student and knew at least enough to do effective first aid. When Taiju tearfully begged her to help, Luna obliged. It must have been so hard for Taiju to see his childhood friend struggling for life in front of him. It was hard for everyone to see their charismatic leader in this state, but Taiju in particular was Senku’s best friend.

I’m surprised that there were no complications to Senku’s wound and that he didn’t just bleed out. The group was stupidly lucky in this case. In other notes, it was amusing when Francois interpreted Senku’s weak gasps as intelligible sentences. This nonbinary butler apparently knows how to read Senku extremely well.

At Xeno’s fort, Chrome and Kohaku were joined by Tsukasa, Ukyo, and Hyouga. They were sent as reinforcements. Tsukasa analyzed the battleground and said the only way to pull off a surprise attack would be to dig a tunnel into the enemy’s stronghold. Just then, the group got a radio call from the Perseus. Ryusui sent the news that Senku had been shot. (The message was encrypted in a simple code that Ukyo knew).

This news was shocking to everyone. Senku also included a message: just the word Chrome. His apprentice knew exactly what this meant: he was now the one in charge of science plans and gadgets. Though he was unsure if he could pull it off, Chrome charged headlong into his new role, knowing he was the only option. He had the idea to build a drill which would be used to dig a tunnel into Xeno’s fort. The plan was doable, but it would take two weeks to accomplish.

In the meantime, the people on the Perseus needed a way to ensure their survival. Attacks from Xeno’s ships would come sooner or later. Fortunately, Senku had thought ahead for such an event. He gave Ukyo the medusa, which wouldn’t work anymore anyway. Ukyo affixed the device to an arrow and shot it into Xeno’s fort. Just as Senku had hoped, Xeno was somewhat intimidated by the bluff.

(Side Note: Gen also helped by lying and saying that Senku’s group had multiple working medusa devices that could petrify any enemy. Poor Gen had a rough time of it in this episode. Maya covered his ears and sang loudly so he wouldn’t hear Xeno’s plans anymore. The force of her clapping his ears nearly crushed his head.)

Although the medusa bluff bought time for Senku’s group, it wouldn’t last forever. Xeno and Stanley asked the mechanic, Dr. Brody, to build something that would help them attack the Perseus. Brody said the project would take two weeks. I suspect they’re building a submarine of some kind, but it was unclear. They made sure Gen couldn’t hear, either. On that ominous note, the episode ended. Sayonara until next time!
