Episode 7: Jurassic Bastard

Episode Rating: 7/10

While Sakamoto and Aoi were out with Hana for the day, Lu and Shin were left to take care of the convenience store. They had an argument that started with Lu stealing Shin’s apron for the dirtier tasks at work. Shin said some immature nonsense, and Lu sank to his level by lashing out and saying she could never be comfortable around a mind-reader. Shin was clearly a little hurt and left the store.

While alone, Lu was kidnapped by a group of people in strange white hazmat suits. They were looking for Shin, but since Lu was wearing the apron with Shin’s nametag on it, they took her instead. For what it’s worth, Lu was sorry for what she said to Shin. She even defended him when the kidnappers mocked him and called him miserable.

Sakamoto and Shin tried to rescue Lu in a high-speed car chase scene. The animation was cool and exciting. However, one of the men in the white hazmat suits revealed himself as Seba, a powerful assassin with the power to turn almost entirely invisible. Seba managed to shake off Shin and Sakamoto temporarily, crashing their motorbike. I love the character design for Seba.

The kidnappers were from a mysterious place called “the lab,” where Shin grew up and got the ability to read minds. The lab covered its existence using a huge science museum as a public front. Seba took Lu into the fort under the museum and put her in a prison cell. He knew she wasn’t Shin, but that her presence might attract the real Shin.

Before being sent to a cell, Lu briefly met Kashima, a rogue assassin who wore a taxidermy reindeer head over his own. The man underneath was covered in stitches. Lu knew he was bad news. We learned from the scientists later on that his name was Kashima and that he was one of the leaders of the assassin group that recently took over the lab. Seba was another high-ranking leader.

Elsewhere, while trying to enter the lab, Sakamoto and Shin triggered the security system. A fossilized dinosaur robot guard suddenly appeared and tried to to fight them. It was tricky, but Sakamoto defeated the giant reptile. Afterward, Sakamoto and Shin took the secret elevator down into the enemy fort.

Inside the lab, they met the scientists, who explained that the lab was recently taken over by Kashima and his group. Just then, one of Kashima’s comrades – a hitman named Mad Horiguchi – entered the premises. The scientists tried to hide Shin and Sakamoto, but they came out to fight anyway. The battle with Mad Horiguchi began.

There are two other quick things to mention. First, two members from The Order (Osaragi and Shishiba) were heading into the lab for unknown reasons. Second, Lu met Asakura, a middle-aged man who claimed to be the director of the lab. Kashima had thrown him into prison during the takeover. The episode leaves off at this point.

Episode 8: Sakamoto’s vs. the Lab

Episode Rating: 7/10

Sakamoto and Shin continued fighting with Mad Horiguchi in the lab. It was a tricky fight because the mad scientist hit them with needles that messed with their minds. One of the needles scrambled all the words Shin tried to say. Another needle hit Sakamoto and made him confuse friends and foes. At one point, Horiguchi injected himself with something that made him huge and buff. However, Sakamoto and Shin worked together and used proximity mind-reading to beat their foe.

Meanwhile, in the prison cell, Asakura told the story of Shin and how he got his powers. Asakura’s friend left his young son in his care and vanished. Reluctantly, Asakura became the surrogate father of Shin. One day, when Asakura wasn’t paying attention, Shin drank a flask of a chemical that was supposed to cause supernatural abilities to manifest in the brain. Within a few days, young Shin could read minds.

Right from the start, Shin liked his power, thinking that this would mean success for the man who was like his father. But the more he used his power without thinking, the more it drove people away from him. The other people in the lab began to avoid him. Asakura felt terribly guilty for turning Shin into an esper and making him chronically unique. Angry and hurt by the older man’s reaction, Shin ran away from the lab. He hadn’t come back in years.

Lu told Asakura he should make up with Shin and that she also planned to do so after her fight with Shin in the previous episode. They broke out of the prison cell together without much difficulty. Lu easily knocked out the guard with a powerful kick.

Osaragi and Shishiba, two members of the Order, slaughtered a bunch of Kashima’s henchman in the lab. Their job was to exterminate Kashima and his comrades for violating the rules of the JAA (Japanese Assassin Association). Osaragi is adorable and voiced by the talented seiyuu Saori Hayami. Shishiba is also cool. His VA is Taku Yashiro, who I only know so far from his role as Tsugaru in Undead Murder Farce.

Sakamoto arrived on the scene and took over for Shishiba and Osaragi. He would have quite a challenge in defeating Kashima, who was strong enough to survive attacks from the Order. Meanwhile, Shin was looking for Lu, when he encountered Seba again. The fights and action – along with cute and funny moments – continue to entertain me in Sakamoto Days.
