Summer 2025 Anime Episode Reviews – Week 6

Welcome back to Anime Rants with 7Mononoke. We’re now at the halfway point for a lot of summer anime. I’m impressed with most of what I decided to watch. Without further ado, here are my episode reviews.

  1. City the Animation Episode 6
  2. Dr. Stone: Science Future Episode 17
  3. Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 Episode 4
  4. New Panty and Stocking Episode 5
  5. Ruri Rocks Episode 6
  6. Sakamoto Days Episode 16
  7. the Summer Hikaru Died Episode 6

City the Animation Episode 6

Episode Rating: 6/10

Though still entertaining, this episode wasn’t as funny to me as some of the previous ones. First, we spent some time with the Adatara family. They are a large family with twin daughters and two sons. The grandfather, Dr. Adatara, is an inventor. He’s friends with Mr. Makabe, who plays pranks on him frequently. Dr. Adatara thought he would prank Makabe back by pretending to be dead, but humorously, he nearly died for real, seeing his life flash before his eyes and a vision of the Grim Reaper. Luckily, he was ok.

At one point in the episode, Niikura got comedically assaulted by the soccer team’s stray balls. That was humorous. We also saw some funny interactions with the manga editor, Todoroki, and the manga artist, Kamaboko. At another point, Wako submitted a manga to the City publisher, but refused when offered a serialization deal. Ecchan and Matsuri continued their goofiness together, with Matsuri putting a green pumpkin over her head and pretending to be possessed. City The Animation is a wild ride.

Dr. Stone: Science Future Episode 17

Episode Rating: 8/10

Senku’s group made a ropeway pulley system and crossed the mountains. Suika nearly fell to her death, but Kohaku saved her. There was an important moment where everyone realized that they were one team now. Hyoga and Xeno had several opportunities to escape or take down members of the team like Kohaku. However, they did not act on any such plans. Hyoga even extended a hand to help Kohaku climb up over the cliff edge with Suika. Even though Hyoga has different ideals and was violent in the past, he seems to be working with the team very well now.

After crossing the mountains, Senku’s team entered the Amazon rainforest, where the dense cover kept them safe from Stanley’s fighter jets. Stanley continued the pursuit, following the tracks of the motorbikes. Senku and company had many adventures in the jungle, using rubber boots to fend off deadly bugs, finding giant fruits, and battling an especially bold anaconda. Finally, the group discovered a mountain of glistening Medusa devices along the Amazon River. What the hell? TBC.

Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 Episode 4

Episode Rating: 10/10

This installment was intense, action-packed, and dramatic. Kaiju 9 was able to make two slightly weaker copies of himself and continue evolving into an even more powerful kaiju. The monster that Kafka defeated was one of Kaiju 9’s copies. Meanwhile, the real Kaiju 9 snuck into the command area disguised as a human. He transformed and began to fight Isao Shinomiya. Only one tech assistant remained to observe while the rest fled.

As the fight raged on, Kaiju 9 seemed overwhelmingly more powerful than the human wielding Kaiju 2’s powers. Even so, Isao managed to expose Kaiju 9’s core with blinding blasts of Kaiju 2’s energy beams. He put up an amazing fight, but in the end, Isao couldn’t deliver the final blow to the core, and was swallowed up by Kaiju 9. The two of them fused. Now, Kaiju 9 possesses the power of Kaiju 2 as well as the body of Isao.

I suspect Isao is dead, but I could also see the show making him pull off one more move before truly biting the dust. For instance, maybe Isao’s influence and willpower will slow down Kaiju 9 or even destroy him from the inside. Then again, he could just be dead. That would be very sad, but appropriate for the story as the kaijus get stronger and smarter. Kaiju 9 would be an even more impressive villain if he went around looking like Kikoru’s dad during their fights. I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

New Panty and Stocking Episode 5

Episode Rating: 6/10

The first half of this episode was about the mutant Garterbelt-turtle ghosts. It was cute that Garterbelt felt so attached to the ghost turtle. It was also funny and heartwarming when Panty and Stocking protected the baby ghost turtles on their way to the sea. In the end, they still had to exorcise the ghost. The second half of the episode was more entertaining to me, as it was a parody of a horror film and commented on common horror movie tropes. As usual, this anime is imaginative, bold, and delightfully dirty.

Ruri Rocks Episode 6

Episode Rating: 9/10

Nagi and Imari finally took Ruri out into the wooded mountains to search for sapphires. Ruri had worked hard taking notes and studying sand from many different streams to isolate the potential locations. She did make a mistake in her notes at one point, which taught her the importance of good documentation and double-checking one’s work. Eventually, the group found the sapphire deposit in a stretch of cooled magma rock covered by leaf litter. Those crystals were gorgeous and I felt so happy that Ruri found them. The parts about the dragon shrine and its legend were also cool. Great episode.

Sakamoto Days Episode 16

Episode Rating: 7/10

Gaku fought Takamura in the JAA while Slur reunited with his companion Uda and continued slaughtering JAA members. Sakamoto, Shin, and Apart soon arrived at the JAA as well. Sakamoto immediately recognized Slur as his old classmate from hitman training, Kei Uzuki. It seems he wasn’t super powerful during school days, but after graduation, he must have unlocked his true power. Now Slur is deadlier than any other hitman or villain we’ve encountered.

Slur engaged in a fierce battle with Sakamoto and company, wounding all three of them. Sakamoto grew enraged when Slur threatened his daughter. Even still, thanks to Shin, he didn’t lose sight of himself. Gaku then arrived, fleeing from Takamura. The chaotic fight went on for a while. In the end, Gaku and Slur escaped. Uda was killed and Takamura went missing. Sakamoto was temporarily hospitalized. Though they saved the JAA, the number of hitmen in Japan was now drastically less than before.

In the hospital, Sakamoto was visited by Nagumo and Hyo, who wanted information about Slur. Sakamoto also wanted more information, so Hyo told him to look into the JAA databank. Shin was troubled and feeling like a burden, but Sakamoto assured him he was helpful. The episode ended on a hopeful note despite being one of the more violent and grim installments thus far. I enjoyed the screentime for Slur, as he seems like a charismatic and interesting villain.

the Summer Hikaru Died Episode 6

Episode Rating: 8/10

This episode revealed that Asako can hear spirits and such, and that the spirits are ghosts of those long dead. With her uncanny hearing skills, Asako found out that this Hikaru wasn’t the same as the person she knew before. She asked who he was really. In response to being found out, Hikaru attempted to kill Asako. Luckily, Yoshiki was there to stop it. Asako was fine, but continued to believe that Hikaru was possessed by a ghost. However, she assumed he was a “good” ghost and wasn’t out to get him.

Yoshiki was horrified by what Hikaru tried to do. To make things worse, Hikaru didn’t comprehend the value of human life, since a) he is not human and b) he has already “died” in the past. Since dying is just your soul changing form, Hikaru reasoned, then is it so bad to die? He continued mulling over all this and also wondering exactly why Yoshiki was so special to him. After all, Yoshiki was the one person he didn’t want to die.

Despite Yoshiki acting cold to Hikaru on that night with Asako, he was back after summer break to bike to school with him again. Thus, the supernatural relationship continues between the murderous mountain spirit and the teenage boy. Meanwhile, the town is still being overrun by “impurities,” and Yoshiki is starting to figure out about the Indo family and the forbidden mountain thanks to a note he found in Hikaru’s room. That’s all for today.
