City the Animation Episode 7

Episode Rating: 8/10

This installment featured a lot of cute and hilarious moments. For example, Ecchan finally told Matsuri that she would be moving to England, and the girls decided to spend as much time together as possible. These two are adorable. In another humorous scene, Niikura narrated in detail her special ritual of eating dried ramen in the middle of the night in a very scandalous manner. I also loved the parts about Mr. Makabe making fried rice and the barber who puts money back into the town. Great episode.

Dr. Stone: Science Future Episode 18

Episode Rating: 8/10

This episode taught us the truth about what happened when the “green light” enveloped Earth 4000 years ago. The reason things weren’t adding up is because they didn’t realize how many Medusa devices were used. Potentially billions of them were sent down from above. Then, on that fateful day, they all activated, starting at the epicenter. But how did nobody notice millions of little things entering the atmosphere? It turns out the Medusa devices have stealth technology embedded in them that prevents them from being scanned by radar.

Senku’s group was in trouble, since they needed to build a new ship and somehow avoid Stanley. He was essentially waiting for them off the coast. Now that they knew about the Medusa devices, Chrome had the idea of covering their new ship in them. There was no shortage, since there was a literal mountain of dead Medusas. This way, they could sneak away from Stanley. In the meantime, Senku asked Nikki’s group to make artificial diamonds. They could then use a new diamond to power a dead Medusa.

It was difficult for Nikki, Magma, Yuzuriha, and the others to do it right. But like all good scientists, they persevered through trial and error, problem-solving at each step of the process. Eventually, they had produced some grains of diamond. Now, how will they make whole jewels? Also, how will diamonds help Senku if he’s on the other side of the world? I’m not sure I understand the plan yet, but things are going well.

Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 Episode 5

Episode Rating: 8/10

Kaiju 9 managed to escape, leaving mass destruction behind. There was no more denying that Isao was gone. The “Neutralization Bureau” announced that he was killed in combat. Kikoru and everyone else was heartbroken over the loss of the Director. In addition, Kafka learned that he might eventually lose the ability to turn human. Part of his hand didn’t transform back, instead remaining Kaiju skin. Kafka started wearing a black glove to cover it.

The funeral for Isao was gloomy and rainy. Kikoru did not attend because she was unwilling to say her goodbye until Kaiju 9 was defeated. Narumi started training Kikoru intensely. Meanwhile, Kafka was allowed to go home for a visit, since he might not be able to return to a normal life after some point. He visited his old coworkers from the clean-up crew. After he returned to base, Narumi asked Kafka for his help in killing Kaiju 9. He was fiercely determined to destroy the enemy.

Narumi also said he couldn’t let Kafka on the defense force, so I don’t know if he is officially part of the military anymore or not. Either way, he’s helping with the mission. Kikoru and Kafka both have their work cut out for them as they train and prepare for their strike back against the Kaiju. On a final note, we learned that part of Kaiju 10’s body was kept alive in a tank. It will now serve as a weapon for the humans. This episode was sad but entertaining.

New Panty and Stocking Episode 6

Episode Rating: 7/10

First, we had angel girls. Then we had demon girls. Now we have … angel femboys. Well, really, they are more masculine than not. They’re like boy pop idols who are also angels. Either way, their designs were cool and sexy. The boys’ names are Polyester and Polyurethane and they came to take away the Heavenly Licenses belonging to Panty and Stocking. They also turned Scanty and Kneesocks into a cursed demon horse. Pissed off, Panty and Stocking fought with the younger angel boys and had a ghost-shooting contest for Heaven Coins.

In order to defeat Polyester and Polyurethane, Panty and Stocking got help from “Geek Girl,” who turned out to have a second identity: that of “Gunsmith Bitch,” who makes Heavenly Weapons out of underwear in her own crafting dimension. I loved Gunsmith Bitch. Thanks to her, Panty and Stocking turned Scanty and Kneesocks back to normal and kicked the asses of the angel boys. After their loss, the boys were taken away by their father and Panty and Stocking’s Uncle, a high-ranking angel named Reima. Things then went back to normal with much bitchy arguing as usual.

Ruri Rocks Episode 7

Episode Rating: 8/10

In this unusual installment, a girl named Shoko Seto from Ruri’s class joined the group in hunting for rocks. Ever since she was in kindergarten, Shoko loved rocks and minerals. However, nobody understood her fascination and serious dedication to the subject. Years later, Shoko joined Ruri, Nagi, and Imari for a hunt for weathered glass bottles. Imari taught a few mineralogy lessons, catching Shoko’s interest.

At the end of the fun day, Shoko admitted to Imari that she wanted to be a geology researcher. Imari encouraged Shoko to pursue her dream. It was a fantastic, moving moment. As the car pulls away, Ruri hopes she can become closer with Shoko, and Nagi gives a bit of trivia. In the past, Japanese people called blue sea glass “Ruri Glass.” Excellent, beautiful episode as usual.

Sakamoto Days Episode 17

Episode Rating: 7/10

In a warehouse with Kashima and Gaku, Slur was hiding, planning to recruit a new pawn. Kashima reattached Gaku’s arm. Meanwhile, to learn more about Slur, Sakamoto decided to go undercover and take the entrance exam to get into JCC, the school for assassins. Sakamoto and Slur both graduated from there, so they might have more intel about the latter.

Shin accompanied Sakamoto and they started the chaotic transfer entrance exam in a flying plane. It was a test to see who could beat the instructors hidden among the passengers. Everyone started killing each other. There was also a rookie assassin with blue hair who briefly met Sakamoto. I don’t know her name yet, but I expect she’ll be a key character for this arc. The episode ends with Shin beating a teenage assassin candidate using his future-predicting eyes. To be continued.

the Summer Hikaru Died Episode 7

Episode Rating: 8/10

This is the episode where Yoshiki tries to kill Hikaru. Despite the strong foreshadowing in the form of opening song visuals, I didn’t see this coming. I wondered what the dramatic scenes could possibly be leading up to. After spending the day playing hooky and having fun together, Yoshiki and Hikaru went to the former’s home. There, Yoshiki stabbed Hikaru in the left side of the chest with a large kitchen knife. Forcing himself to do this made him sick, and he offered his own life when he saw he couldn’t kill Hikaru.

I don’t think Yoshiki hates this new Hikaru, but he also doesn’t want him to kill his family or friends. To protect everyone, Yoshiki decided he needed to eliminate the monster. But it seems his will wasn’t very strong – probably because he still has feelings for Hikaru. As soon as Hikaru showed his earnest desire to change and weakened himself by removing the bone from his insides, Yoshiki dropped the idea of trying to kill him. He instead stated that he was going to stick with Hikaru no matter what.

Yoshiki also said that they would need to do some research and find out what exactly Hikaru was. As the scene fades, we see a momentary vision of Hikaru’s monster body swallowing Yoshiki. I assume this wasn’t literal, but an artistic device to show that Yoshiki is still putting himself in danger by loving this creature. It was difficult to see Yoshiki pushed so far that he would stab someone who looks like his best friend. His pain will likely continue as long as he keeps this relationship up. As usual, this episode was entertaining, creepy, and thought-provoking.
