Summer 2025 Anime Episode Reviews – Week 9

This was a really great week for most of the anime series I chose to watch. Several of the episodes were fantastic! However, sadly, my current favorite among them had no episode this week. The Summer Hikaru Died episode 9 was postponed one week (until September 6th). I’m dying to know what happens next, but I’ll have to wait. Anyway, here are my episode reviews for Week 9. Enjoy~

  1. City the Animation Episode 9
  2. Dr. Stone: Science Future Episode 20
  3. Kaiju No. 8 Episode 19 (S2 Ep 7)
  4. New Panty and Stocking Episode 8
  5. Ruri Rocks Episode 9
  6. Sakamoto Days Episode 19

City the Animation Episode 9

Episode Rating: 8/10

This episode was so much fun. It was time for the fourth City Race, where pairs can participate in a huge running challenge in teams of two. The prize for the winning pair was 1 million yen. (That’s almost $7000 USD). Many hijinks went on during the race. It was cute when Tanabe asked out Adatara for dinner. I was rooting for Nagumo and Niikura, and they had some great moments. However, the winners at the end were Matsuri and Ecchan. I think they deserved the win. Again, really fun episode.

(Ecchan and Matsuri are the winners!)

Dr. Stone: Science Future Episode 20

Episode Rating: 9/10

This was an intense installment that I thoroughly enjoyed despite the heavy ending. Based on the ending song and other bits of foreshadowing, I suspected for a while now that something serious would happen to Hyoga, Tsukasa, and Kohaku. However, I wasn’t expecting them to actually get killed. Naturally, I don’t believe Kohaku is dead for good. Senku will find a way to bring her back in the end. But she and the other two are certainly out of commission and probably won’t be around for the final season.

(Kohaku sheds tears as Hyoga sacrifices himself)

The fight with Tsukasa versus Maya was cool, but I could imagine it being better animated and more drawn out for dramatic effect. As it was, the fight was intense but short and simple. This episode also had a lot of good screen-time for Francois, who is my favorite supporting character. It was nice to see Francois save Suika and the others from being shot. Now it’s time for the final showdown with Stanley. Senku and his team had better make Stanley pay for taking down Kohaku, Hyoga, and Tsukasa.

(Francois is doing the best they can)

Kaiju No. 8 Episode 19 (S2 Ep 7)

Episode Rating: 9/10

I had a great time watching this episode that focused on Reno and Iharu. Previously, I was a strong shipper of Kafka x Reno, but now, I think it’s better for Reno to be with someone closer to his own age. But that’s enough about my personal love of gay shipping in this anime. Or is it? All things considered, this episode was as gay as a shounen can get without actually showing kissing, and I’m here for it. Reno and Iharu clearly have a special bond even if you don’t think it’s romantic.

(Iharu saves Reno)

In other notes, I thought it was interesting that the Numbers have a drug-like effect when wielded by humans. While there doesn’t seem to be any crazy euphoria, there is an influx of neurotransmitters that cause the human to enter an enhanced state of being. I assume adrenaline plays a big role. Reno got too high and tore his muscles to pieces, also breaking one of his legs completely. I hope he recovers soon and has more resistance in the future to the brain altering effects of Numbers 6.

(Reno under the influence of Numbers 6)

New Panty and Stocking Episode 8

Episode Rating: 8/10

I wasn’t crazy about the first two mini-episodes about the Rookie Cop. However, the second half of this installment was about musicals and swear words, so I loved it. A Heavenly ruling was preventing Panty from swearing, but she found a loophole by singing the words instead. I have a rather dirty mouth myself and I love musicals. Even though I’m not good at it, I love to sing in the comfort of my own home. So, I absolutely loved Panty’s songs of curse words. This was arguably my favorite episode so far.

(Fuck: The Musical)

Ruri Rocks Episode 9

Episode Rating: 8/10

Ruri and her friends looked for opal in this episode. It was a fairly standard installment where they spend a lot of time searching and researching, finally discovering a large deposit of gorgeous opals at the end. I say, “fairly standard,” but for this anime, that means it was an amazing episode. There were so many cute, goofy, and beautiful moments. This episode also had a few “fan service ish” moments where Nagi dressed in cute clothes – including a maid outfit! She is so hot and cute.

(Nagi in a maid dress?!)

Sakamoto Days Episode 19

Episode Rating: 7/10

The third stage of the exam began with the contestants playing tail-tag in the woods. They were discouraged from killing each other, since so many candidates were lost falling out of the plane. Three special recommendation students joined for the third stage: Shinaya, Kaji, and Toramaru. They’re all tough, but the most dangerous one seems to be Toramaru. Despite her cute appearance, she’s a bit crazy, and seems to love hunting others down. Right now, she’s after Shin and Mafuyu, who are on a team.

(Toramaru is voiced by Hisako Kanemoto)

Meanwhile, Sakamoto was on a team with Akira and Kill Baby. They were attacked by another team, but just when they were about to be overwhelmed, Akira went into assassin mode for the first time. She was bad-ass! Sakamoto discovered that Akira’s last name is Akao, making her a relative of the famous female assassin Akao, who fought alongside Sakamoto and Nagumo in the past. It was an entertaining episode and I appreciate that there are more female characters now. (I miss Lu though.)

(Assassin Akira activated)
