The Nurturers – Examples of ISFJ Anime Characters

Hey, good to have you here today! You might already know, but I’ve been blogging about different MBIt types in anime. I chose to focus on ISFJ today. ISFJ stands for Introverted, Sensing, Feeling, and Judging. People and characters of this type draw energy from being alone, focus on tangible reality and the five senses, make decisions based on personal values and who will be affected, and prefer a structured lifestyle. The cognitive functions for ISFJ are Si, Fe, Ti, and Ne.

My friend describes this type as “savage cinnamon-buns.” He was referring to how ISFJs can be very intense and protective, but are so sweet and delicate on the inside. A meme I found once had a funny picture of “The Brain of the ISFJ,” half of which was filled with duty, honor, intensity, protectiveness, and passion. The other half was full of things like chocolate, flowers, and puppies. Hopefully that gives you an idea about the ISFJ personality. Enjoy!

1) Hagi (Blood+)

Hailing from the underrated vampire anime Blood+, Hagi is the personal servant of the main character, Saya. He is strong but quiet, patient, and extremely loyal. If you try to hurt Saya, he will literally turn into a monster to protect her. This man is also excellent at playing violin and cello, showing the ISFJ’s tendency to appreciate artistic sensory experiences.

2) Hubb Lebowski (Wolf’s Rain)

Sweet and thoughtful, Hubb can never quite get over his wife who left him. Although he loves relaxing at home too, he’s quite serious about work and duty. Like most ISFJs, Hubb is interested in a peaceful, secure, and traditional life.

3) Iggy (Ergo Proxy)

Iggy is an android who serves Re-L, the female protagonist of Ergo Proxy. A weakness of ISFJ types is that they sometimes internalize or hide their feelings too much, building stress until it affects their health. An ISFJ who has bottled things up for too long is frightening when he “snaps.” This happens with Iggy. He lets out all his frustration and aggression on Re-L after she failed to notice that he had developed sentience. Prior to that, he was always caring, soft-spoken, and motherly.

4) Kobeni Higashiyama
(Chainsaw Man)

Kobeni is a young Devil Hunter from the popular 2022 anime, Chainsaw Man. She is highly introverted and a rather anxious, neurotic girl. Despite getting overly emotional at times, Kobeni is usually practical and private in nature. She doesn’t tell other Devil Hunters about which Devil she contracted with. (Please don’t give me manga spoilers.)

Mindful of money, she loves her family enough to support them with what she earns from Devil Hunting. In a pinch, Kobeni is fierce, using a combination of Devil powers (which haven’t yet been revealed in the anime), a knife, and her naturally acrobatic body.

5) Kousei Arima (Your Lie in April)

Arima is an ISFJ who is incredibly talented at playing the piano. Emotional and physical abuse led him to internalizing his feelings and feeling misplaced guilt when his abuser suddenly died. Believing that he is being punished, he stopped playing the piano and retreated into his shell. ISFJs are emotional and sensitive, slow to heal. However, their loving nature often leads them to find meaning again in their relationships and service to others.

Note: The current consensus from the Personality Database is that Arima is an ISTJ. Obviously, I don’t agree, but you can make a case for it in the comments if you want

6) Lan Fan (FMA: Brotherhood)

Lan Fan is a servant and highly skilled protector of Prince Lin Yao. She is extremely dedicated to Lin, willing to give her life and limbs to defend him. Many ISFJs have good practical and physical skills. Although the stereotype suggests examples like music and decorating, physical skills can also include martial arts, acrobatics, and weaponry. Lan Fan is great example of this. She is an amazing warrior.

7) Misaki Takahashi (Junjou Romantica)

One of the two main characters in the yaoi classic Junjou Romanitca, Misaki falls in love with an older man and ends up living with him. Though he fusses and complains, Misaki is rarely serious in losing his temper with his lover. Empathetic, loyal, and helpful, this young man also takes care of the household chores and cleaning. He enjoys making things look good.

Note: An argument can be made that ESFJ is a better fit for Misaki, but I think he’s just a bit more outgoing than the stereotypical ISFJ.

8) Nezuko Kamado (Demon Slayer)

Nezuko is a popular character from Demon Slayer who is ironically a demon herself. But unlike most demons, she doesn’t hurt or consume humans. Rather, she helps protect her brother as he fights the demons. In my opinion, Nezuko really doesn’t have much personality, as she doesn’t speak and pretty much exists for cuteness appeal. However, based on what little is there, we can probably say she fits the stereotype of ISFJ.

9) Raphtalia (Shield Hero)

Personally, I could only tolerate watching three episodes of Shield Hero before dropping it. But for those who enjoyed the anime, here is your beloved raccoon girl, who is an ISFJ according the Personality Database.

10) Rem (Re:Zero)

Rem is the widely accepted “best girl” of the popular anime Re: Zero. She is amazingly cute and sweet, excelling at housework and cooking. Nobody is more supportive than Rem once she decides to trust and love someone. However, be careful not to piss her off, because she’s also an oni – a type of demon who enters a mindless rage when its magical horn is activated.

Rem trusts her instincts and senses, which is why she was justified at first in believing that Subaru was an enemy. Additionally, she has a somewhat judgmental nature, which is mostly turned on herself. Rem loves her sister so much that she can’t forgive herself for having perfectly normal thoughts of envy and resentment. She’s an example that shows ISFJs often judge themselves too harshly.

11) Retsuko (Aggressive Retsuko)

Retsuko is an adorable red panda and an example of an unmarried adult female character in a misogynistic working environment. She is sweet-natured but also has a very down-to-business attitude. A diligent worker, she puts up with a lot of stress. Additionally, Retsuko has a special, secret hobby – to vent her frustrations, she goes to karaoke and sings death metal. This is the ISFJ at her finest.

12) Rue Kuroha (Princess Tutu)

Beautiful and graceful, Rue is a talented ballet dancer admired by the whole class. Her secret alter-ego is Kraehe, the dark princess of the crows who is trying to control the pure-hearted Prince Mytho. Rue is actually so in love with Mytho that she doesn’t mind trampling over his will or preventing what’s best for him in order to keep him close to her. Rue is an emotionally turbulent ISFJ and an example of what can happen when this type becomes unbalanced.

13) Ruth / Rutz (The Ancient Magus’ Bride)

Quiet and a bit intimidating, Ruth is intensely loyal, sweet, and simplistic in his desire to protect his “master.” He’s dependable, and when there’s trouble, he’s fierce. If you think this character sounds like a dog, you’re not wrong. Ruth is a shapeshifting black dog out of Celtic myth who becomes the familiar of a young mage.

14) Ryuuji Takasu (Toradora)

He may be quiet with a scary-looking exterior, but Ryuuji is otherwise an angel. Endlessly understanding and dependable, he is also loyal, protective, and great at housework. Additionally, Ryuuji loves cooking and seems to find meaning in caring for others.

15) Sawako Kuronuma (Kimi ni Todoke)

The socially awkward protagonist of Kimi ni Todoke, Sawako is a big sweet-heart. I’ll need to re-watch the series to remember more specifics, but she is a great character.

16) Tony Tony Chopper (One Piece)

I have watched only about 50 episodes of One Piece, which means I never got to Chopper’s arc. As many fans find this character purely annoying, I’m not sure if Chopper is the best example of the kind, nurturing ISFJ. However, according to recent votes from the Personality Database, ISFJ is indeed the right type for this little reindeer.

17) Tsukinose Vignette April
(Gabriel Dropout)

Despite being a demon, Vignette is far kinder and more sincere than the angels in Gabriel Dropout. A stickler for doing things “right,” and a sentinel for etiquette and decency, Vignette is right on the border of ISFJ and ISTJ. In the end, she’s more concerned with compassion than logic, so she’s still an F type.

18) Yor Briar Forger (Spy x Family)

Yor is a popular character and a great example of an adult ISFJ woman in anime. Her real job is that of an assassin, and she excels at her work despite finding no actual pleasure in the act of killing. It’s just her job. To seem less suspicious, Yor enters a fake marriage with Loid Forger. Although she’s not the most traditional wife or mother, this sweet woman takes excellent care of Loid’s daughter, Anya. She is a protector and nurturer by nature.
