Welcome to Anime Rants! In place of Wednesday’s Random Rants, I’m covering examples of anime characters for each of the 16 personality types in the Myers-Briggs model (the MBTI). Today we’re covering INTJs. For descriptions of this type, check out The Personality Page, 16 Personalities, or Human Metrics. They each have good write-ups describing this personality type, which is often called the Mastermind or the Strategist. Without further ado, here is my list of 16 randomly selected INTJ anime characters.

Ciel Phantomhive (Black Butler)

Due to youth, he’s less poised and cool-headed than many on this list, but Ciel is INTJ all the way. He is driven to find out who killed his parents and humiliated him, using whatever strategies and tools he can. Ciel even enlists the power of a demon to serve him and help him meet his goals, offering his soul in exchange.

Elias (Magus Bride)

It’s difficult to assign a type to Elias since he isn’t human and can’t feel many human emotions. Still, I think the closest match for Elias would probably be INTJ. He’s confident and fine with occasional socializing, but prefers a lot of alone time in his quiet study. Far from being practical or traditional, Elias probably wouldn’t be the sensing type. Since he has little to no ability to feel emotions, and little to no sense of moral values, he can’t be a Feeler. That being said, he isn’t quite as fair- and logically-minded as most Thinkers. Elias plans ahead and prefers organization and structure. In short, he’s introverted, intuitive, thinking, and judging.

Griffith (Berserk)

One can argue Griffith is an INFJ, but I think he’s just slightly a better fit for INTJ. The way he successfully leads his band of followers to becoming great warriors is impressive. So is the way he managed to make himself great and accepted by (most) nobles of the country in such a short time. His strategies and quiet confidence definitely point to INTJ. Note: What I know of Griffith only comes from the 1997 anime; I haven’t read the manga or seen the newer berserk anime.

Heinrich Lunge (Monster)

Lunge is a detective who shows many INTJ traits like having great strategies, senses of logic and reasoning, excellent deductive ability, and ability to think outside the box. He records all information he learns meticulously, using it to help him form analyses of people and situations, as well as solutions to problems and mysteries. Also like a classic INTJ, Lunge has trouble with understanding and/or respecting the values and feelings of others. He puts his interests (his detective work) before his friends and family, which results in his wife divorcing him and his daughter becoming estranged.

Kei Nagai (Ajin)

Kei is the main character in the Netflix original series Ajin. He’s decisive, thoughtful, and logical to the core. Even after he is tortured by the people at an experimental facility, Kei did not hold a grudge, and saw no sense in the idea of killing for revenge. Though this INTJ had no single plot long in the making in this series, he still plans ahead with smaller schemes and is impressive in his effectiveness. Kei seems emotionally distanced from others, but he rarely acts arrogant. In thinking, he is definitely an iNtuitive type, inventive in his ideas.

Kirei Kotomine (Fate/Zero)

I haven’t watched Fate/Zero before with the specific intent of studying the characters, and I’m probably not qualified to give Kotomine Kirei a personality analysis, seeing that I’m biased against him. I hate his guts. That’s one mark of a great anime villain. It’s true he’s an antagonist in the story, but many fans admire and respect Kirei as much as the protagonists, and since most of them are amoral or immoral too, you might as well like “the badguy.” In a reddit discussion, most of the people seemed to believe Kirei would be an INTJ, and that is why I included him.

Kurapika (HxH)

Ah, after thinking about the horrible Kirei, thank goodness we have Kurapika, an example of an INTJ well equipped with a sense of values and integrity. Like many INTJs, this young man is individualistic, and if not exactly ambitious, then keenly focused on his plans and their future success. More than many others on this list, Kurapika values friendship and altruism highly, and even as he prioritizes his goal over everything else, he still struggles adopting the mindset that the end justifies the means. Kurapika’s small tribe of people were wiped out, leaving him as the only survivor. He seeks to have vengeance and bring justice on the ones responsible.

Kyouko Kirigiri (Danganronpa franchise)

Miss Kirigiri is only highschool-aged in the first Danganronpa series, but she’s already a worthy detective. Her goal in attending the famous Hope’s Peak Academy is to reconnect with her father, who, according to rumors, is the principle. of the school. Kirigiri comes across as cold, aloof, and even arrogant, though once you get to know her, you realize she’s just very introverted and highly logical. Now and then, Kirigiri uses dubious means to help reach her goals. Still, she’s someone who believes in the human spirit and wants hope to win over despair.

Kyouya Ootori (Ouran Highschool Host Club)

Kyouya is textbook INTJ. It shows especially in the way he’s so analytical, calculating, and always one step ahead of the others. Like other INTJs on this list, he had a plan long in the making that he pulled off at just the right time, much to the surprise of his family. I don’t want to spoil Kyouya’s character arc completely, but what he does is something that finally wins him the respect of his father and puts him on equal footing with his both of his extremely gifted older brothers.

Makise Kurisu (Steins;Gate)

Everyone’s favorite “sciency” girl, Kurisu (AKA Celeb 17 Kristiiiina) is a teenage genius, with articles already published in science journals and magazines. She shares the INTJ traits of having a sharp mind, forming strategies well, and being independent, decisive, self-confident, hard-working, and determined. Of all the INTJs in this list, Kurisu is the closest to being an F type, as she is sensitive, reasonably humble, amazingly patient, and perceptive of others’ feelings. When it comes down to making decisions, though, logic comes before personal feelings.

Makoto Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell)

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Ghost in the Shell, movies or anime TV series. I’ve never tried to analyze The Major’s personality before. But over at Personality Cafe, people have been quick to peg The Major as an INTJ. Based on what little I remember, I’d have to agree.

Nagi Kirima (Boogiepop 2019)

Analyzing the characters from Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2019) was a lot of fun for me in the winter 2019 season. Nagi is clearly an INTJ. With her keen mind, various skills, excellent strategies, determination, and thirst for knowledge, Nagi seeks to understand and analyze mysterious beings like Boogiepop and the Fear Ghoul. It’s also her goal to eliminate those creatures if any of them threaten her school or home city.

Ray (The Promised Neverland)

Ray is close to being an INTP. At least, I think so, being an INTP and seeing a lot of myself in this character. Unlike us relatively directionless INTPs, however, Ray likes to think ahead, develop plans, and follow through. He’s truly ambitious. For many years, Ray has had just one major goal, for which he has slowly and steadily planned and prepared. I don’t want to spoil what it is, so if you haven’t seen it yet, go watch The Promised Neverland!

Satsuki Kiryuin (Kill la Kill)

Satsuki is among my top 10 favorite female characters in anime. She is determined, logical, strategical, ambitious, independent, self-confident, and able to think outside the box. INTJ weaknesses include arrogant, impatience with others, and refusing to compromise — Satsuki showcases all these tendencies. She’s right on the border of INTJ and ENTJ, being extremely charismatic, a persuasive communicator, and great at leading others. Still, she’s slightly more like an introvert than an extravert.

Toshio Ozaki (Shiki/ Corpse Demon)

Toshio is the highly intelligent, knowledgeable, dedicated, and versatile doctor for the little town in which Shiki/Corpse Demon takes place. Depending on your own sense of values, you might see Toshio as a villainous character, since he is perfectly willing to throw away all sense of humanity and resort to any nasty means to fight the Shiki. But his motivation in doing so is to protect and save the remaining villagers, and his arguments are logically sound in nearly every instance. Thus, you can also see Toshio as the hero of the series. Dr. Ozaki exhibits most of the same INTJ traits as the others on this list.

Tsumugu (Nagi no Asu kara/ A Lull in the Sea)

Tsumugu is one of my favorite male INTJ characters. He’s a good example of an INTJ who isn’t plotting world domination particularly ambitious. He loves science and his goal is to be one of the few active researchers studying and analyzing the underwater people and the Enna skin that lets them breathe while submerged. Being smart, innovative, and adaptable, Tsumugu succeeded in his dream and is now a grad student studying what he loves. He exhibits most INTJ characteristics, but compared to the others on this list, he’s much more of an introvert.

I hope you enjoyed this list. Note: Lelouch from Code Geass is also a great example of an INTJ anime character, hence the cover image, but I got a bit tired of talking about him all the time. Some people consider Light from Death Note an INTJ, but in my opinion, he’s most definitely an ENTJ. That’s about it for now. Thanks a bunch for taking the time to read this post.
