Sunday Select: 7 Saddest Anime Deaths

Welcome to Anime Rants! This list contains the top 7 saddest deaths in anime for me personally. They are listed in alphabetical order. Enjoy!

Warning: this article contains spoilers!

1. Cal (Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom)

Cal has a tragic story. Her death was truly heart-breaking and it deepened my appreciation for the series and its themes. Despite her problems in temperament, I really loved this character.

2. Hige and Blue (Wolf’s Rain)

I included two characters for this since they die at the same time. For me this is one of the saddest entries in this list. They are wolves who can disguise as humans with magical illusions. In a time when the world is ending, lots of people die, as do the last of the wolves. Hige and Blue die fighting for their pack’s survival and to protect Cheza, the holy Flower Maiden.

3. Reiko Tamura (Parasyte: The Maxim)

Reiko is a man-eating creature called a Parasyte. I enjoyed her character, with its intelligence and curiosity, throughout the show. It was also great that she developed human emotions of motherly love just before her death. She gave her life to protect her human baby.

4. Sayaka Miki (Madoka Magica)

This is perhaps the anime death that moved me the most. I have a deep connection to the story and character of Sayaka. She starts out spunky, hopeful, and innocent, but spirals into deep despair due the events of the show. She dies and turns into a mindless witch monster

5. Shun Aonuma (Shinsekai Yori)

Shinsekai Yori is one of my top 3 or 4 favorite anime series. I love all the main characters, but I have a special fondness for Shun. He dies tragically from a supernatural syndrome that makes h8s vast psychic powers destroy everything and everyone around him.

6. Yuki (Tokyo Magnitude 8.0)

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is an underrated anime that few people know about. It’s a highly emotional story. Yuki is the younger brother of the main character, Mirai. The two of them and one caring adult try to survive and find their way home after a magnitude 8.0 earthquake. Most unfortunately, Yuki’s life is lost during the harrowing journey.

7. Yuno Gasai (Mirai Nikki)

At the end of the series, Yuno finishes the survival game and puts an end to all the chaos she created… by giving her life. Yuno is the famous “yandere queen” and an immensely interesting character. She’s another one of my favorites. Rest in peace.

That concludes my list of the anime deaths that were saddest for me. Thanks for reading. Have a great day. 🙂
