Sunday Select: 7 Favorite 2012 Anime

Notes. This list only covers anime that began airing in 2012, and not any that carried over from the previous year(s). Also, it only includes anime TV series; no films or OVAs. Last of all, note that these items are listed in order of personal enjoyment, from least to greatest. I really like all of them, though.

1. The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

Personal Enjoyment Score: 7/10 Good

Pros: It’s a school/rom-com/drama anime, with very cute JC Staff animation, a variety of likeable, well-developed characters, and emphasis on art, creativity, and hard work. It also has very relatable central themes of effort and dealing with failure.

Cons: It’s a school/rom-com/drama, wherein the plot seems to drag at times, the drama can seem a bit overboard, and there are predictable romantic troubles and scenarios, and love triangles. Neither the voice-acting nor the music/songs are particularly memorable.

2. Another

Personal Enjoyment Score: 7/10 Good

Pros: Lots of death and violence, an excellent mystery story, a good horror show or at least good at being creepy, great animation, memorable music, and a very cool and cute main female character (Misaki Mei).

Cons: Lots of death and violence, a very slow build-up in the first few episodes, a rushed conclusion, supernatural contrivances, and poorly developed characters.

3. Medaka Box

Personal Enjoyment Score: 8/10 Excellent

Pros: It’s a school comedy anime with some great action/fight scenes in some episodes, excellent voice-acting, nice and stylized animation, and a strong main female character I absolutely fucking adore: Medaka Kuromi.

Cons: The art-style is hit-or-miss, some people complain about the fanservice, the character development is slim for supporting cast, and for reasons I can’t begin to fathom, some fools really dislike Medaka. xD

4. Humanity Has Declined

Personal Enjoyment Score: 9/10 Magnificent

Pros: laidback plot, hilarious humor, anime culture references and satire, witty social commentary about modern Japan and/or most modern cultures, good voice-acting, pleasant music, and cute characters and creatures.

Cons: You might miss some of the messages and meanings if you’re not careful; in that case, all you have is a bizarre fantasy slice-of-life with completely absurdist humor and low-budget art and animation. Not for everyone.

5. Zetsuen no Tempest

Personal Enjoyment Score: 9/10 Magnificent

Pros: It’s an intriguing fantasy/drama/psychological story with many awesome plot twists and mysteries, great art/animation, magnificent voice-acting, interesting world-lore, and a cast of characters I completely adore… including the unforgettable Aika Fuwa.

Cons: In the second half, the series takes a very different turn, has a bit less psychological content, and makes highly important scenes seem anti-climactic. If you don’t like the characters, or don’t really get into mindgames, this anime won’t be enjoyable.

6. Psycho-Pass

Personal Enjoyment Score: 10/10 Perfect

I love this series so much and it’s had such a huge impact on my life that I cannot give pros and cons without bias. I don’t believe there are any significant cons to the series.

7. Shin Sekai Yori

Personal Enjoyment Score: 10/10 Perfect

This is another case like Psycho-Pass. I love Shin Sekai Yori so much and it’s had (and continues to have) such a huge impact on my life. So I cannot give pros and cons without strong bias. I don’t believe there are any significant cons to the series.
