Fruits Basket 2019 Review for Episode 25

I hope you’re ready because it’s time for another anime rant! I thought I’d be terribly behind on normal episode review posts this weekend, what with my PC broken. But a relative invited me over and is letting me use her computer, at least for a few days. Anyway, let’s rant about Fruits Basket episode 25!

As I expected, the final episode of Fruits Basket season was largely a peaceful resolution episode. It still packed plenty of punch in the feels department, of course. First we saw Shisho’s backstory and Kyo’s confrontation with him. Shisho thought Kyo didn’t want him as a parent or couldn’t think of him a real parent, but in reality, Kyo just didn’t think he was worthy of calling Shisho his dad. Secretly, Kyo wishes Shisho was his “real” father.

After Koyo’s little arc, Yuki got one. Other character appeared in it, including Kagura and Hatsuharu, showing their own thoughts and struggles. Yuki is feeling down, but I don’t exactly know why or what that has to do with Kyo revealing his other form. Likewise, I don’t exactly understand what Kagura is “fighting” with or why. Maybe she sensed that Kyo is probably in love with Tohru? Anyway, after Hatsuharu tells him that Tohru is worried, Yuki goes to see her, and explains his struggles, how he is improving, and how he plans to continue to do so.

I really enjoyed the scene on the stairs with Yuki and Tohru. I’m not on “team Yuki” as far as wanting him with Tohru (necessarily), but I think Yuki is probably my favorite character after Hana-san. Not only do I love his character design and adore his Japanese voice, I also admire his ability to push forward and continue trying, little by little, even when he feels so wretched. I empathize with the way he has to deal with such intense emotions, and I can somewhat understand his trauma, having had my own share of frightening isolation.

Haru, Ayame, Hatsuharu, Momiji, and Kagura all come to dinner with Tohru, Kyo, and Yuki. Meanwhile, Shigure spends time with Akito. As much as this was a peaceful resolution episode, it was also a teaser for the next season, which will air sometime in 2020. Two transfer students were seen, but their faces weren’t showed, as they reacted to seeing Yuki for the first time. Who are they? Also, Hiro-kun visits someone named Rin while she’s in the hospital. Whoever she is, she’s menacing and beautiful at the same time. She says something vague about wanting to do something about “the curse.”

What will happen with Shigure’s love for Akito? Who is Rin? Is she referring to Kyo’s curse or Akito’s supposed curse, which I still don’t understand? I’ll have to wait till next season to find out. (Or I could read the manga. But knowing me, I won’t.)

Anyway, that’s it for my thoughts on this episode. I’ll have more thoughts and opinions to share on the series overall in my series review.
