What I will be Watching for Fall 2023

Welcome to Anime Rants. At the time of writing this article, I am still far behind on my Summer 2023 episode reviews. It may take a while still before I catch up, but whenever that’s done, I’ll begin covering a few new Fall anime series.

It turns out that nine or ten series were far more than I could handle in one season. So, this time, I’m only picking six shows, at least to start with. I might also pick one or two more if there’s something I just can’t miss. Anyway, you can expect some episode reviews for these six series starting in late October.

1) The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 (Part 2)

Starts: October 5th, 2023

Where you can watch (legally): Crunchyroll

Notes: As a fan who has followed this anime for several years, I am compelled to continue watching. Though the show has some issues, its magical atmosphere, mythological creatures, and interesting main characters easily outweigh the downsides.

2) Undead Unluck

Starts: October 7th, 2023

Where you can watch (legally): Hulu

Notes: The story concept sounds good and darkly humorous. Fuuko, a girl who brings misfortune everywhere she goes, is probably going to be a relatable character. Since this anime was made by David Production, a highly successful studio, I am expecting lots of quality animation and action. Let’s hope for the best – even though the title is pretty cringe. (Someone please tell Japan that “Unluck” is not a word.)

3) Spy X Family Season 2

Starts: October 7th, 2023

Where you can watch (legally): Crunchyroll

Notes: The first season of Spy X Family (two cours) was a huge success. Everyone around me hyped it up, and for once, I agreed that this anime deserved it. I absolutely loved Spy X Family and can’t wait for more cute and funny shenanigans!

4) Stardust Telepath (Hoshikuzu Telepath)

Starts: October 9th, 2023

Where you can watch (legally): Crunchyroll

Notes: This choice is a bit different from my usual anime tastes, since it’s going to be a school comedy with some supernatural mixed in. I saw the trailer, and I’m not crazy about the animation style. The only reason I want to try this series is that it reportedly has elements of “Girl’s Love” (Shoujo Ai). I occasionally enjoy this genre a lot.

What I’m hoping for is a sweet, cute, and somewhat emotional anime that will show the love between two girls without over-sexualizing them. Again, let’s hope for the best.

5) Dr. Stone: New World Part 2

Starts: October 12th, 2023

Where you can watch (legally): Crunchyroll

Notes: Ever since I started watching in 2019, I have loved Dr. Stone. It’s more goofy and vanilla than what I usually enjoy, but it’s great for the positive depiction of science and the strength of human ingenuity. The first cour of Dr. Stone: New World (essentially the third season) was released this past spring, bringing many new plot elements and characters. Needless to say, I’m stoked for more!

6) Pluto

Starts: October 26th, 2023

Where you can watch (legally): Netflix

I picked this series simply because the sci-fi setting sounded interesting. When I watched the trailer, I realized immediately that I’d stumbled on something good. Pluto is a new adaptation of Astro Boy, one of the earliest anime series in existence, dating back to the 1960s. Astro Boy (or Tetsuwan Atom in Japanese) was made by the legendary anime creator Osamu Tezuka, who sadly passed away in 1989.

That’s not all. The man who borrowed from Tezuka to create this new series is none other than Naoki Urusawa. If you don’t know, Urusawa is the original creator of Monster, an extremely well-written and well-respected manga/anime. (Monster is also one of my top 5 favorite anime series ever.) If this genius artist was the one behind Pluto, then it’s sure to be an amazing production. I can barely wait!

Also Note: Unlike the other shows on this list, Pluto is an ONA that will only be available through Netflix (well, legally, anyway). It is expected that all 8 episodes will drop on Netflix on October 26th.

Thank you for reading!

  1. Yes, I’m very excited for SpyXFamily to be returning! I’m currently rewatching the first season to get ready for the new episodes. I’m also looking forward to Migi and Dali. I read the manga, and it has a unique creepy cute mystery feel to it.
