Spy x Family ‘s second season has so far managed to keep all the original charm and appeal of the first season. This series features a unique combination of wholesomeness, action, and comedy. That’s what makes it so enjoyable to so many people. It’s truly rare to find an anime like this: balanced in terms of content, devoid of most problematic tropes, and with high-quality audio and visuals. Today, I present my reviews and responses to the next three episodes of Spy X Family season 2.

Episode 4 (29): The Pastry of Knowledge /
The Informant’s Great Romance Plan II
The first of the two stories in this episode was about Anya as she tries to obtain the “Pastry of Knowledge.” A royal chef is working in the cafeteria for a limited time. Legend has it that his rare pastries increase knowledge and intelligence, leading students to win stella awards. This time, the pastries are macarons. George buys five of them before the cafeteria is sold out for the day.

Anya and Becky, along with Damian and his two friends, convince George to give them four macarons. But there are five kids who need pastries. So in order to decide a loser, they all play Old Maid. Anya wins easily using her telepathy, but agrees to a second match. She plays this one without cheating. It was actually Damian who lost, since he couldn’t stand making Anya cry. Unfortunately, the macaron didn’t actually make Anya any smarter. (Surprise, surprise.)

The second part of the episode showed Franky attempting to find a lost cat named Kopi. The cat belongs to Kacey, a girl Franky likes. While trying to track down Kopi, Franky runs into Yor, who offers to help. Together, they find and capture the missing kitty. However, this noble deed came with a cost – Yor destroyed Franky’s exo-suit, which he spent ten years making. To add insult to injury, Kacey already has a handsome boyfriend. Franky tearfully decides to give his life to his job. Lol.

This episode was very entertaining and funny. Of the two stories, I enjoyed the first one a bit more. Anya’s exaggerated face expressions are amazing. To be honest, I don’t find Franky super funny compared to the rest of the cast, but he has his moments. It’s cool how he makes inventions. On a final note, I loved the moment when Yor pounced and caught Kopi. She is so skilled, scary, and beautiful. That wraps up episode 4.

Episode 5 (30): Plan to Cross the Border
Episode 5 was the start of a mini-arc that will carry over into the next episode. Yor goes to see “Shopkeeper,” the eccentric man who gives her assassin jobs. His garden is beautiful, but his face is weird. Anyway, he tells Yor that her next job is to protect a woman named Olka as she flees the country. Olka’s whole family was killed except for her baby son, and more assassins could be after her. Yor will go with her on a cruise and be her bodyguard until she transfers to another ship heading out of Ostania.

At a supermarket raffle, Anya uses her telepathy to let her win the first place prize: a free cruise. It happens to be on the same ship that Yor is taking with Olka and her baby. Thus, Loid and Anya go with Yor on the cruise. Anya loves the huge ship, the ocean, and the luxuries offered by the cruise. She has a great time with Loid. Meanwhile, Yor bonds with Olka, who is going by the disguise name of Shaty. Unfortunately, someone is listening into their conversation through wiretaps. To be continued.

One thing that interested me about this episode was the presence of some very good Japanese voice-actors. Junichi Suwabe is a long-time favorite of mine, and he’s extremely well-known and loved by seiyuu fans. He appeared in this episode as the Shopkeeper, Yor’s boss. Another familiar voice was Aya Endo, playing Olka/Shaty. She has a deep and wistful voice that’s great for narration or monologues. It was great hearing these talented voice-actors.

There were plenty of other things to enjoy in this episode, including the scene where Anya has an imaginary angel and devil on her shoulders. I love that trope in old cartoons. Besides that, Anya’s happiness at seeing the ocean was great. Her energy is contagious. The cruise and Yor’s protection mission are shaping up to be exciting and fun adventures! It’s hard to go wrong with this anime.

Episode 6 (31): The Fearsome Luxury Cruise Ship
Loid continues to fret as he supervises Anya, who is having a great time on the cruise. Meanwhile, several assassins are out to kill Shaty and her family. The old director of the mission disposes of one killer who was following them down the hallway after some drinks. Yor kills another assassin who came straight to Shaty’s room. Knowing there are more enemies, Yor guides the Grey family out of the room and toward the stern.

On their way through the ship, Yor and company are followed by an especially feirce assassin called “Chain-and-Sickle Barnaby.” Anya and Loid are in a gift shop nearby, and the mind-reading girl realizes what’s about to happen. She convinces Loid to start trying on clothes in the dressing room. With her father distracted, Anya heads toward her mother. As she approaches, she sees Yor narrowly dodge a deadly strike from a sickle on a chain. It’s time for an assassin battle! To be continued.

This was the most exciting and entertaining episode of the second season so far. I enjoyed the action as well as the comedy. The entire scene in the gift shop with Anya and Loid was hilarious. Anya’s temper tantrum over the skeleton keychain was not the funniest thing per se, but her face expressions are amazing. Also, Loid’s thoughts as he tries to understand his daughter were comedy gold – especially since Anya could hear everything he was thinking.

It was sweet to see Loid trying so hard to play a good father. It’s true that playing the role is his mission, but it’s also pretty obvious that he’s at least a little attached to his “fake” family. In fact, I think all three members of the Forger family love each other dearly. It’s just that most of the time, they won’t let themselves recognize this. It might make them vulnerable or compromise their various goals. Maybe one day, Loid will able to embrace the fact that he cares about Anya.

Yor continues to impress me with her skills and strength. She’s still my favorite character. The maker of Spy x Family did such a great job inventing an adult female character who is tough and capable, but also very relatable in daily life. She’s such a dork sometimes, and I empathize with that. In this episode, I loved the scene were Yor “danced” with that assassin and broke his hands. Priceless. Anyway, that’s all for today. Thank you for reading~
OMG, I loved when Anya finally got to eat a macaron of knowledge and she got a power-up ala Goku from Dragon Ball. I wonder if those cookies were made by a Super Saiyan?
