Spy X Family Season 2: Episodes 10 to 12 (or 35 to 37)

Sometimes, writer’s block or low motivation makes it so I can’t produce a lot of content on this blog. When that happens, there’s not much to do but wait it out. Other times, the delay in content can be caused by temporarily losing interest in an anime. I often forget that I actually love a certain anime, so I fall behind on watching it. That’s what usually happens with Spy X Family.

Watching this fun and wholesome anime almost always brightens my mood. It’s weird how easily I forget this and choose to procrastine rather than just watch the next episode. Anyway, with Christmas over, I finally watched the three most recent episodes of Spy X Family season 2. My thoughts and responses are below.

Note: I’m going to run through these episode responses quickly because I’m trying to catch up with the endings of several Fall 2023 anime series by New Year’s Eve.

Episode 10 (35): Enjoy the Resort to the Fullest / Bragging about Vacation

It was cute to see Anya enjoying the island resort. From riding on a horse to going snorkeling in the ocean, she had a great time. The cutest scene with Anya, in my opinion, was when she was getting nuzzled by the sheep. Yor also did great spending time with and taking care of Anya throughout the day. As Loid recognized, she must have been very tired, but she still put 100% into everything. What a great mother!

Anya’s attempts to brag about her vacation were quite humorous. I also felt bad for her, though, when she was embarrassed. After that, Anya came home to find that Yuri had came over to the Forger’s house. Throughout the episode, Yuri was as creepy and gross as ever. I doubt the show will ever make him get over his obsession with Yor because it’s a pretty good gag to consistently make the character pathetic and off-putting.

I loved the part when everyone talks about lying. First, we hear what Loid’s true thoughts: details about how to lie effectively. But in reality, with a blank expression on his face, he verbally condemned the act of lying. He was lying about lying in order to protect his identity. Yuri basically did the same thing for his part. I thought this was really well done and ironic. As Anya overhears the thoughts of the two men living their complex lies, she thinks lying is too much effort, and decides to avoid it in the future.

Episode 11 (36): Berlint in Love /
Nightfall’s Daily Life

Becky’s obsession with Loid was humorous, but it also wouldn’t be age-appropriate for an actual child of her age. It’s sad to see that even at six years old, she’s internalizing the idea that she needs to have an exciting romantic/sexual life. Kids that age should not be thinking about marriage or sex. They shouldn’t have to believe their destiny is wrapped up in a partner, or in romance. It’s especially true that young girls are encouraged to think this way, and it needs to stop.

(Becky fantasizing about marrying Loid)

Now, I don’t think it’s bad to let little kids have their little romances. But these should not be sexual, nor obsessive to such a degree. And such little romances should only be encouraged among peers. Becky should be taught to run from any adult that would ever even pretend to reciprocate interest. As far as the sexual jokes and hints, I don’t think Becky understood most of what she was saying. But she was still copying bits from a romance drama meant for far older audiences. It was, again, a bit sad to watch.

(Becky attempting to be sexy. She’s six…)

The last third of the episode was about Agent Nightfall, AKA Fiona Frost. Although this woman is an impressive spy and has a very cool character design, I don’t like her that much. I associate her too strongly with the stupid trope of being in love with Twilight. When that overused and un-funny bit came up in the first season, it was a such a disappointment for me. And it still annoys me here in season 2. Overall, I didn’t enjoy this episode as much as usual.

Episode 12 (37): Part of the Family

This was an enjoyable final episode of season 2. Actually, I’m not sure if it’s the end of the second season, or just the first half of the second season. Either way, it was a good episode. Bond did everything he could to change the future for the better. He even saved a little puppy from a raging fire. He’s such a good boy and a brave doggo. It was really funny to see him all wet, too, after having a bucket of water poured over him.

Loid’s reaction to the wet dog was also great. I think he’s becoming slightly more lenient with himself in terms of experiencing different emotions. Clearly, he is still uncomfortable with normal emotional displays, but I feel like he’s loosening up a bit compared to how he was at the very start of the series. It’s good to see.

(Loid trying not to laugh)

Bond still fears being thrown out by the Forgers, which makes a lot of sense for a dog that was mistreated in the past. Bond is a strong boy, but he still has his fears and worries. That’s why it was so good to hear Loid’s reassurance toward the end of the episode. He said training can take a back seat, and the priority is to make sure Bond understands that he’s part of the family. That was so wholesome!

Thanks for reading~
