Good day to you, one and all! Welcome to Anime Rants. Today we are continuing with the series of lists of my favorite anime characters according to hair color. As usual, these choices are my personal favorites, and not selected according to popularity or suggestions. Entries are listed in alphabetical order. With that, I’ll leave you to it. Enjoy!

1) Kobayashi (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)

This character is a favorite of mine because we actually have a lot in common. She’s low-energy, normally not very expressive, complains a lot, gets a sore lower back often, and frequently enjoys her alcohol a little too much. In Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, this deadpan main character takes in a dragon-girl as a maid. She complains about it, but can’t argue with the convenience. By the end, Kobayashi has become dear friends (and possibly something more) with the dragon maid.

2) Lucy/Nyu/Kaede (Elfen Lied)

Since she has three personalities, “Lucy” is often considered to be an anime character with Dissociative Identity Disorder. In reality, this isn’t accurate, since the character’s alters arose differently from what we see in real DID. But the point is that she does indeed have multiple selves. First there was Kaede, arguably the main “front” personality who is tomboyish, rough around the edges, but very fun-loving and quick to form attachments. Kaede is not a human, but a creature called a Diclonius, and her species predisposes her to hating humans and being violent. This combined with bad trauma resulted in the cold and murderous personality of Lucy. Years later, Kaede/Lucy split again following a head injury. The new personality was called Nyu, and was extremely innocent, childlike, and not very bright.

“Lucy” or whatever you want to call this system of personalities has been a favorite character of mine for many years now. There are many aspects of her I can empathize with to some degree, including the conflicting hatred of humans and desire for acceptance by humans.

3) Madoka Kaname (Madoka Magica)

The titular protagonist of Madoka Magica actually barely made it onto this list. That’s because, even though I absolutely love Madoka Magica, I’m not sure how fond I am of the personality of Madoka herself. The Madoka we see for most of the series is fragile, timid, and indecisive. Her caution and fear are very understandable, but sometimes aggravating. But Madoka eventually makes a huge choice that shows her true bravery and altruism. Also, there are multiple world timelines in this anime, and some versions of Madoka are much less fearful and more confident. So I decided to include her after all. Also, I admire Madoka’s great love for her friends, which is a constant trait of her personality, even in the worlds where she seems so fragile and unreliable. She’s always agonizing over what she can do to help her loved ones.

4) Ram (Re: Zero Starting Life In Another World)

Although most Re:Zero fans favor her blue-haired sister Rem, the demon maid Ram is my personal favorite. I love everything about her, from her harsh attitude to her backstory about losing her magical powers. We got to see further character development for her last year in Re:Zero season 2. I definitely ship her with Roswaal. Anyway, Ram is yet another spunky and interesting pink-haired anime character!

5) Utena Tenjou (Revolutionary Girl Utena)

A highly unusual girl, Utena dreams of being a heroic prince, and expresses herself in a way that defies gender norms (wearing the boys’ uniform, for example). She has been a favorite character of mine since I first saw RGU several years ago. I love Utena’s cheerfulness, sense of justice, and dedication to her friends. Additionally, I strongly admire her always trying to be true to herself. Utena is also widely considered a bisexual character, which is also a plus in my book. She is best friends “and something more” with another girl named Anthy, and the show is arguably their dramatic love story.

6) Yuno Gasai (Future Diary)

As a girl who is cute and loving, but also extremely dangerous and insane, Yuno is often called the queen of yanderes. She is the stalker and love interest of the anime’s main character Yuki. I have written quite a lot about Yuno on this blog in various places, since she is one of my favorite characters in all anime. To avoid being redundant, that’s all I’ll say.

7) Zero Two (Darling in The Franxx)

Not only is this character crazily attractive, she also has an extremely interesting character arc across most of the anime series. While Zero Two doesn’t seem to have a likeable personality early on, the growth she goes through in the series leaves her much more mature and empathetic by the end. Plus, her dominating personality traits can be pretty hot. The story of Zero Two focuses on her not being human and what she does to try being more like a human, even while despising them and dealing with their mistreatment over the course of her life. Zero Two is definitely among my top 10 or 15 favorite female anime characters!

Runner up:
Saiki Kusuo (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K)

I don’t necessarily relate to Saiki very much, but I do find him and his reactions highly entertaining and humorous. Since he deals with so much trouble from his psychic powers and their complications, Saiki has no energy to spare on being an enthusiastic friend. His friends care about him a lot, but he just isn’t interested in being social. Another interesting thing about Saiki is that he is widely considered to be an asexual anime character. I definitely agree. For a guy like Saiki, coffee-flavored jellos are much more important than social annoyances like sexual attraction or romance.

Special Mention:
Sophita (Casshern Sins)

I know I already presented seven characters with pink hair as well as a runner up, but I can’t complete this post on good consciousness without mentioning one more character. I need to mention Sophita because she’s one of my top 10 favorite female characters; however, since she only appears in one 20-minute episode, I didn’t want to include her with the characters who are mostly central in their anime series.

Anyway, Sophita is a sentient android who was created to be the ultimate warrior (prior to the creation of Casshern, who is superior). Known as the Angel of Ruin, Sophita spends her time traveling and fighting anyone who will accept her challenge and give her an exciting fight. She normally kills her opponents. But when faced with the kind-natured Casshern, who doesn’t even want to fight, Sophita finds herself not truly wanting to kill him. How will she deal with this revelation? I would take too long to describe exactly what makes me love Sophita. It’s related to the idea of being born for conflict. For more detail, check out this post about Sophita.
