The Supervisors: ESTJ Anime Characters

Welcome to Anime Rants! I’m slowly crawling on in my series of posts about MBTI anime characters. This week we have the Executives or the Supervisors, the ESTJ. This stands for Extroverted, Sensing, Thinking, and Judging. People of this type are energized by social interaction, focused on reality and common sense, driven by a logical mind, and prefer an orderly lifestyle. I’m not sure if I’ve met anyone of this type, so I looked at online descriptions.

Personalitypage.com says the ESTJ is, “Practical, traditional, and organized. Likely to be athletic. Not interested in theory or abstraction unless they see the practical application. Have clear visions of the way things should be. Loyal and hard-working. Like to be in charge. Exceptionally capable in organizing and running activities. ‘Good citizens’ who value security and peaceful living.”

According to 16personalities description, ESTJ strengths include being dedicated, strong-willed, direct, loyal, reliable, and being excellent organizers. Their weaknesses include being inflexible, stubborn, uncomfortable with unconventional ways, judgmental, and being too focused on social status. They also have trouble with being sensitive and expressing emotion and empathy. With all this in mind, let’s look at the selections I’ve made of ESTJ anime characters. Feel free to give me your thoughts, but please be polite!

Disclaimer: Not all entries have detailed notes

Cornelia li Britannia (Code Geass)

Cornelia is a Britannian princess who chose to serve as a military general and even engage in combat in the mechs known as Knightmares. What this woman wants, she will get. There will be no mercy in the way she fights and conquers in the name of her country. Cornelia is not a good person, since she gives no thought to the racist agenda dominating the military and government. Still, in her own role, she serves well.

Emi Yusa (The Devil is a Part Timer!)

Back in her home world, Emilia Justina was a powerful and dignified hero, the child of an angel and a man, and the one destined to slay the demon lord Satan. Unfortunately, she gets pulled into our world, becomes Emi Yusa, and struggles with the ways of modern life alongside Satan.

Many ESTJ-like personality traits become clear in Emi as she battles the logical contradictions of coexisting with a bitter enemy. While stubbornness can be found within any personality, it is certainly more common to some types. The ESTJ can be extremely obstinate and aggressively insistent on being right, and this is also a defining trait of Emi.

Esdeath (Akame ga Kill)

My thoughts on Esdeath can be found in this post. She is a powerful, commanding general. Many people believe Esdeath is an ENTJ, but at the current time, I don’t agree.

Eva Heinemann (Monster)

Eva is known among Monster fans as the nastiest bitch in the entire series. She is an emotionally turbulent ESTJ with many of the typical weaknesses of the type, but few of the strengths. Eva’s flaws include pride, stubbornness, trouble with empathy, impatience, and too much concern with social standing. The problems are made worse by her heavy alcoholism.

Ira Gamagori (Kill la Kill)

As a textbook case of his type, Gamagori screams ESTJ in everything he does. He is feared all over the academy as the chairman of the disciplinary committee. Although he can be aggressive and arrogant, Gamagori balances out his less desirable character traits with qualities like strong loyalty and mighty willpower.

Jean Kirstein (Attack on Titan)

Jean is stubborn and outspoken, with high standards for himself and others. When he was in training, he often incited fights by butting heads with people he didn’t agree with. But he also has amazing leadership qualities. Jean is courageous, practical, commanding, and can think strategically in a bad situation. As an adult, he is one of the best Titan fighters in the series. Although he never becomes an official commander, others look to him for leadership.

King Bradley
(Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Bradley is the Fuhrer of the nation of Amestris. He is a strong military leader who places great value on the quality of dedication in both himself and others. Additionally, he is athletic, excelling in hand to hand combat and fighting with a saber. Despite some good personality traits and impressive feats, Bradley is ultimately a villain. Throughout the anime, his evil deeds and schemes become clear.

Kiroumaru (From The New World)

There are mixed opinions about this character, from people who see him as the noble ally to the dwindling humans, to people who see him as the backwards enabler of a longstanding slave dynasty. Either way, Kiroumaru is a monster-rat general whose loyalty to the humans never dies. In war or in tight situations, he is practical, unhesitating, and straightforward in his thinking. Out of all the monster-rats, he is the strongest physically. He loves and respects the traditions of his monster-rat colony and its ruling queen.

Kiyotaka Ishimaru (Danganronpa)

As an exceptionally talented young man, Ishimaru was invited the eccentric and elite Hope’s Peak Academy, where each student has a specialty and associated title. Ishimaru’s title was “Ultimate Moral Compass.” He is an athletic, outspoken person who guides and encourages others with his strength. His energy and enthusiasm are endless. While many ESTJs in anime are controlling and immoral antagonists, there are also cases of ESTJs who fiercely adhere to moral codes. Clearly, Ishimaru is one such case.

Mary Saotome (Kakegurui)

Mary is a good example of an ESTJ who starts out rather detestable, but improves with time and experience. She begins as purely stubborn, power-hungry, and insensitive. But she develops better qualities like being a loyal ally, a practical thinker, and someone who wants to improve the corrupt systems at work in the school.

Nami (One Piece)

I have only seen a few early arcs of One Piece, so I don’t feel qualified to give any details about Nami. However, she is an ESTJ according to the Personality Database. I do remember her being very assertive and practical, which is in keeping with ESTJ traits.

Nishio Nishiki (Tokyo Ghoul)

Nishiki is a ghoul who fell in love with a human against his own better judgement. Eventually, he became part of Anteiku, a group of ghouls that avoids killing humans. Inflexible, aggressive, and impatient, Nishiki clearly shows significant ESTJ flaws. However, he also has admirable qualities like dependability, loyalty, and high intelligence that stems from his logical, practical mind.

Note: Additionally, Nishiki is a great example of the more socially suave type of ESTJ. He’s popular, and people love him for his strength, smarts, and confidence.

Rudol von Stroheim (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

YOU FOOL! GERMAN SCIENCE IS THE BEST IN THE WOOOORLD!!!

(Ahem. Von Stroheim is a great example of a disciplined, determined, and strong ESTJ man.)

Sebastian Michaelis (Black Butler)

Sebastian is a demon who is helping a human boy in exchange for devouring his soul at the end of the deal. He is the ultimate example of the charming subtype of ESTJ. Despite being a predatory demon, Sebastian is wildly popular both in-universe and among fans of the anime. Part of this popularity stems from his good looks, but much of it is also the result of his personality.

With overflowing confidence, social prowess, and amazing physical abilities and skills, Sebastian can do almost anything. He has a keen, logical mind and a pragmatic, straightforward way of solving problems. This is the ESTJ at its most socially successful self, having developed patience and reserve uncommon to this type’s normal presentation.

Shuichi Aizawa (Death Note)

Aizawa is an important member of the police task force trying to catch Kira. Many ESTJ characteristics can be seen in this man, including dependability, thoroughness, and a strong sense of duty. He can also be brusque and impatient, prone to anger. Because he uses very practical logic, he often feels frustrated at L’s unusual methods. I decided to include Aizawa because he’s a prime example of a “good” ESTJ man rather than an antagonist.

Tatsumaki (One Punch Man)

Tatsumaki is a superhero with tornado and gravity control powers. She shows the stereotypical loudness, impatience, and harsh judgements of an ESTJ. But she’s also dedicated, confident, powerful, and effective at what she does.

Tenya Iida (My Hero Academia)

Iida is a strong, serious boy who is training to become a professional hero. He is a case of an ESTJ who values honor, duty, and hard work. He believes strength should be used to protect others.

Note: Some have suggested that Iida is more like an ISTJ due to his more introverted nature. This may be correct. I think you can argue well for either type.
