Seiyuu Series: Nobuhiko Okamoto

Good day to you and welcome to the continuation of Anime Rants’ Seiyuu Series. This is where we look at seiyuu (Japanese voice-actors) and their various parts in anime series. Today the spotlight is on Nobuhiko Okamoto, a newer talent who has appeared in many roles over the past few years. First, I have provided a list of 18 roles that Okamoto has played in anime. These are not all of his parts, but the ones that stick out at me the most. After the list, I’ll share my notes about this seiyuu, as well as my first time hearing him and my favorite role. Here goes!

18 Roles In Anime

Accelerator (Railgun/Index franchise)

Agnes Aguero Khun (Tower of God)

Dagger (Black Butler: Book of Circus)

Isaac Foster (Angels of Death)

(Isaac Foster)

Issei Tsumuhana (Ookamikakushi)

John Brown (Ghost Hunt)

Karma Akabane (Assassination Classroom)

Katsuki Bakugo (My Hero Academia)

Mikoto Mikoshiba (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun)

Obi (Snow White with Red Hair)

Rin Okumura (Blue Exorcist)

Ryou Kurokiba (Food Wars)

(Rin Okamura)

Shouta Kisa (World’s Greatest First Love)

Takumi Usui (Kaichou wa Maid-sama!)

Tohru Mutou (Shiki)

Usagi/Rabbit (Zodiac War)

Yoichi Saotome (Seraph of The End)

Yuu Nishinoya (Haikyuu!)

Nobuhiko Okamoto has a truly unique voice. It’s a bit higher than we see in the majority of male seiyuu. His voice has a natural rasp that also helps make it one-of-a-kind. When this seiyuu shouts or laughs, his voice breaks or gets hoarse, but maintains amazing vocal power. He can scream or laugh maniacally like no other. People can get annoyed with too much of this, and I must admit I agree sometimes, especially in roles like Usagi/Rabbit from Zodiac War.

Okamoto is often type-cast as the crazy and/or aggressive character. Examples include Isaac Foster, Katsuki Bakugou, and Usagi. But Okamoto can play stable and relatively cooperative characters on occasion. The best cases are Issei from Ookamikakushi, John Brown from Ghost Hunt, Tohru from Shiki, and Nishinoya from Haikyuu. Nishiyo is one of Okamoto’s best roles, though it isn’t my personal favorite.

First Time Hearing

I believe it was in 2014 when I watched Blue Exorcist and heard Okamoto for the first time in the lead role of Rin the half-demon. He did very well playing this part. Rin is a free spirit and quite rebellious, but he has a sweet heart at its core. He’s not completely crazy like some Okamoto characters, but he still has the “rebel” vibe. I enjoyed listening.

Favorite Role

Nobuhiko Okamato famously played Karma Akabane in Assassination Classroom. This would undoubtely be my favorite part he has played to date. While Karma does have a louder, “crazy” side, he normally operates calmly and coolly. So this is a role where Okamoto pulled off the “cool guy” character excellently. I also liked hearing him sing in several of the Assassin Classroom opening songs.

I hope you enjoyed this look into the seiyuu Nobuhiko Okamoto. Thank you for reading.
