Sunday Select: 7 Vampire Anime

Welcome to Anime Rants! I hope it’s a good Sunday for you. Today I present a list of seven different anime about vampires. They are listed in alphabetical order and I put my score of personal enjoyment for each. Enjoy!

Blood+

Personal Enjoyment: 8/10

Blood+ is one parto f several anime productions about Saya, a girl vampire who hunts other vampires. Others in the franchise are similar but not connected, and include Blood-C and Blood: The Last Vampire. I enjoyed Blood+ quite a bit. I recommend giving it a try if you like some drama, mystery, and romance along with a decent amount of action.

Diabolick Lovers

Personal Enjoyment: 5/10

This anime is a reverse harem, otome-styled production about a girl who lives with a family of vampire brothers. In my opinion, it’s a pretty inane and ridiculous show, but it’s popular with certain audiences who enjoy the sexual tension and otome style. As for me, I found a bit of enjoyment watching it because to me it’s so bad it’s funny. I don’t recommend watching unless you are a big fan of Otome games.

Hellsing Ultimate

Personal Enoyment: 7/10

Hellsing Ultimate is a series of 10 OVAs with astounding visual and audio quality. It’s based on the manga and continues the story of the older anime Hellsing. I appreciate this series, but it’s far from being a favorite of mine. I was hoping for something more than just excessive violence. The character development is a bit weak and the humor feels very out of place. The anime is good for enjoying the visuals and getting a violence fix, but not much else, in my opinion. I recommend watching it if you can deal with intense violence and some sexual elements.

Miss Vampire Who Lives In My Neighborhood

Personal Enjoyment: 7/10

This is a charming, humorous story about a girl who becomes aquainted with a gentle vampire named Sophia. The show is laid-back and casual, but still explains its own take on vampires. It’s a really cute anime, so I say watch it if you want a sweet, silly slice-of-life.

Seraph of The End

Personal Enjoyment: 8/10

Seraph of The End is in some ways a weak story, or at least has overused elements, but I enjoyed it a lot. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see the story progress beyond two short seasons. The artwork and animation are good, some of the characters are interesting, and the music is awesome. For the most part, I like the way this show handles vampires, including the characters Krul Tepes and Mikeala Hyakuya. I recommend watching it if you like shounen shows with a slightly darker and more nuanced atmosphere.

Shiki

Personal Enjoyment: 10/10

Shiki is by far the best vampire anime on this list. In my opinion it’s the best vampire anime made to date. Finally, it’s vampires done right, with creepiness, horror, and violence mixed into a deep story with meaningful themes and psychological elements. The story takes place in an isolated town in Japan which is gradually becoming infested with “shiki” (vampirical corpse demons). I recommend all anime fans to watch this amazing anime.

Vampire Knight

Personal Enjoyment: 5/10

A popular shoujo series, Vampire Knight is about Yuuki Cross and her experiences with the Vampires at her school. It’s got a lot of the shoujo tropes and weak plot and characters. It really wasn’t my cup of tea. However, I think the animation was impressive for 2008. In addition, I enjoy the soundtrack and frequently listen to the opening song. Vampire Knight isn’t all bad, but I think it fails to be a good vampire anime. It’s worth a watch only if you’re into shoujo.

I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a bit about these series. Thanks so much for reading!

  1. Absolutely agree on Shiki. Hellsing Ultimate has its moments. I absolutely hate Diabolik Lovers with the burning intensity of a thousand desert suns because I really don’t find the overwhelming abuse the vampires put the girl through to be sexy or romantic at all (and they never get their butts properly kicked for it).
