I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History Episode 7 – Gill Takes The Spotlight

Welcome to Anime Rants! The character of Gill started out as a weak and bitter little kid. But by episode 7 of RekiAku, he is responsible, loyal, and thoughtful, with the desire to become stronger and protect what he loves. Let’s see how Gill handles some time apart from Alicia in this episode.

Episode 7: The Villainess Sits This One Out

Episode Rating: 7/10

When we last left off, Alicia had locked herself in a small shack to practice her magic alone. She wouldn’t let anyone in, and she never came out. A powerful magical barrier was activated at all times. Gill missed Alicia, but he made an effort not to be down in the dumps about it. He started fitting in with the other servants in the Williams Estate. In the end, Alicia stayed locked up for a total of two years. She returned at the end of the episode, but before we get to that, there are other events to mention.

Since Alicia was absent, Gill was basically the main character of this installment. We also got some time with Duke and a few other characters. There was a scene I liked that showed Gill talking to Alicia’s father (Arnold) in the library. Despite his attempts to limit Alicia’s actions, I really like Arnold. From his perspective, he’s just trying to protect his daughter. All his words and acts come from the natural sweetness of his heart. Gill and Arnold had a good conversation and both seem to respect each other.

Life is starting to improve in Roana. Old Man Will, the orphans, and Rebecca harvested a field of potatoes. They were rewarded with several bags of crops. It was Alicia who taught them to grow that variety of potato, which can survive in the perpetual shade of Roana. However, not everyone is accepting of Alicia and her interference. Rebecca’s friend Nate, for example, refuses to trust nobles. I can’t really blame him, either.

The next scene shows the King overwhelmed by his workload. He asks Prince Duke to take on the job of reforming Roana, which the royal family has put off for several generations. Duke agrees. This episode also tells us that Duke is using his magical familiar to investigate Liz Cather. He suspects that she is using some kind of magic mechanism to make everyone love her. I don’t like Duke much as a character, but at least his investigation could prove useful to Alicia.

There were a few short scenes that featured the green-haired boy (Curtis Kenwood) and the yellow-haired boy (Finn Smith). I wish this show spent more time on those characters. They have interesting enough character concepts, and both are played by incredibly talented Japanese voice actors. (Nobuhiko Okamoto voices Curtis and Ayumu Murase voices Finn.) We’re already seven episodes into the series, so I don’t expect much from them at this point, unfortunately.

In the last part of the episode, Alicia finally completes her time training in the shed. That means she must have achieved level 90 magic. A servant informs Gill of the news, and he sprints off to go see her. Now that she’s fifteen, Alicia has definitely grown. She looks like a proper young lady. Gill blushes cutely when he sees her, and the episode ends there. It was a good installment overall.

  1. So Alicia is now fifteen, and looks much more similar in age to Duke and Liz and such. Well, Duke is still creepy, and she is still very young, but at least now it might not be so visually jarring. I mean, the difference in years was not nearly so creepy as the simple fact that Duke’s been after her since she was eight.

On which note: Duke was once again creepy with both his mysterious, phantasmal spy, whoever she is, and how he voiced his desire to be the only one who knows the real Alicia. Which, it would be romantic if he wanted to be the first to know her, to know her like no one else does, but to be the only one to know her like that at all, ever? Creepy, possessive, and jealous, that strikes me.

I did very much appreciate how Finn and Curtis are nudging Duke a bit. They point out how truly extraordinary it is for everyone to love Liz so much, in such a way as make Duke really think about it, and they step back and let him look into the possibility of enchantments at work. That’s a seed which can only curtail Liz’s growing influence, if it bears fruit, and they do it subtly, without coming out openly against her. They’re on to her, and they’re being smart about it.
