The Thinkers: INTP Anime Characters

Today, we’re going to look at example of INTP characters in anime. The letters stand for introverted, intuitive, thinking, and perceiving. That means this type gets their energy from being alone, thinks innovatively with focus on ideas rather than facts, makes decisions based on logic rather than values, and prefers a flexible lifestyle with room for spontaneity. The main cognitive functions of the INTP are Ti, Ne, Fi, and Se. This type is sometimes called “The Logician” or “The Thinker.”

What exactly are INTPs like? INTPs usually have issues with motivation and don’t care about boring life maintenance – so they have a reputation for being unmotivated. Many INTPs are very bright, yet despite their love of knowledge and ability to learn quickly, they don’t always direct these traits in normal or productive ways. Theories, systems, and abstract ideas are extremely interesting to INTPs, but finding direction in life can be hard.

Some INTPs can be witty, teasing, playful, and trollish. However, they are quieter and less likely to have good people skills compared to the ENTPs, who have those same tendencies but extraverted. Generally, INTPs are intensely introverted. They are also usually logical and technical in their thinking. For more information, check out the INTP descriptions at the Personality Page, the 16 Personalities site, or the Human Metrics site. Now, here is the list of INTP anime characters.

Disclaimer: Not all entries have detailed character notes.

Aika Fuwa (Blast of Tempest)

Aika is an important character in Blast of Tempest, though we mostly learn about her through flashbacks. She is a strictly logical person, rarely caring about emotional implications for anyone. Additionally, Aika loves to tease and test the wits of those close to her. Though she is introvert with few friends, this girl can be surprisingly eloquent and confident. Aika is my favorite character in Blast of Tempest due to her natural charm and logical thinking.

C2 (Code Geass)

C2 (or C.C. in some subtitle versions) has an interesting story, possessing supernatural power and living for several centuries. But this is about her personality and not Code Geass spoilers. I believe C2 is an INTP due to her intuitive style of thinking and her logical mindset. In addition, she has the INTP vibe of not giving a crap and calmly doing whatever she wants at her own pace. Although she certainly helps the main character with this his battle plans and tactics, she’s happiest just chilling on the bed with some pizza.

Gabriel Tenma White (Gabriel Dropout)

Gabriel is a good example of an INTP stereotype. She started out highly motivated to be a great angel who saves humans. But as soon as she was sent to the real world of humans, Gabriel lost her motivation and instead became obsessed with video games. She also seems strongly disillusioned with humanity and the world at large. It’s an endless struggle for Gabriel to go to school and continue her role as an angel in training when all she wants to do is slouch in front of her laptop with no pants.

Ginko Yoki (Mushishi)

Ginko is a traveler who specializes in identifying and removing Mushi, which are basically spirits that can become pests to humans. He’s extremely good at his job because he has a vast mental database of knowledge about his field, which he’s always eager to tweak and expand. Ginko is extremely chill, staying calm and using logic and creativity to solve problems. This man is an example of an INTP who found his place in the world. The life of a wandering traveler and and eternal learner keeps him interested and motivated in life.

Gintoki Sakata (Gintama)

Known to friends as Gin, this man is the star of the classic anime comedy, Gintama. Similar to the previous entry, Gin is a case of an INTP who found something that works for his unusual personality. He runs a small business where people can contract him for odd jobs and general help. In a city full of aliens, rogue samurai, and military police, a job like this will never be boring.

Because of finding his place in the world, Gin is generally energetic and expressive. He’s a much more animated person than the INTPs from the previous entries. Gin’s zany energy and humorous reactions make him all the more lovable.

Killua Zoldyk (Hunter x Hunter)

Killua was raised as an assassin, but after surviving years of abuse, he turned away from his family to find a better life. This boy uses his creative thinking and quick wits to become a master of combat without resorting to killing. He is keenly intelligent and good at working through logical steps to solve problems. Emotional expression sometimes make Killua uncomfortable because he’s so used to hard logic. On the other hand, Killua’s logic also informs his sense of fairness, which helped him to develop better morals.

Kino (Kino’s Journey)

Kino is a young traveler considered by many fans to be non-binary, since they reject being referred to as either male or female. They just want to be called “Kino,” so that’s what I’ll call them. There are two versions of the Kino’s Journey animated series – one from 2003 and one from 2017. Although there are some differences between the two versions of Kino, I think we can still say they are same personality type, which is INTP. Kino is one of the more “chill” INTPs, and it takes a lot to ruffle their feathers. They are logical, original, and sometimes abstract in their thinking

Kobayashi (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)

Miss Kobayashi is a good example of a more realistic INTP anime character. She manages to work, spicing up her life with drinking and unusual friends. Her interest in life greatly improves after Tohru the dragon moves in with her. Kobayashi doesn’t show a lot of emotion or vulnerability, but like most of us, she loves her small group of friends and would be lost without them.

Konata Izumi (Lucky Star)

Konata is the spirited main character of Lucky Star. She is a good example of the more silly, trolling side of an INTP. Konata often teases her friends, acts like a goofball, or makes random anime and gaming references that nobody else gets. She’s a very chill girl, rarely getting riled up over anything other than anime and games.

Kusuo Saiki (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K)

Saiki is a great hilarious character and a fairly good instance of an INTP boy in anime. He’s introverted, logical, and more innovative than practical in his thinking style. Since Saiki is a psychic who constantly deals with paranormal stress, it’s no wonder he’s unmotivated and unsocial most of the time.

L (Death Note)

L is a genius detective whose true name and origins are unknown. He is a prime example of an INTP anime character. With his strong intuition and logical mindset, he solves many crimes. L often comes across as bored and unmotivated. Things that excite him include intelletual competition, the feeling of being right, and sugary deserts.

Migi (Parasyte: The Maxim)

Migi is an alien lifeform who acts in the place of the right hand of a certain human. This unusual creature is extremely logical and thoughtful. He isn’t capable of empathy, but he goes out of his way to learn to get along with his host. Migi loves learning and has creative ways of solving problems that arise.

Ranpo Edogawa (Bungo Stray Dogs)

Ranpo is a detective in the Armed Detective Agency of Yokohama. He’s an amazingly genius man. Compared to someone like L, Ranpo is more animated and cheerful. His INTP traits are clear, as he uses introverted thinking and extraverted intuition in his mystery-solving process.

Rio Futaba
(Rascal Doesn’t Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai)

Futaba is my favorite character from Rascal Doesn’t Dream. She is a bright young girl who loves learning. Throughout the show, Futaba is very helpful to the main character in the way she explains things or suggests ideas.

Tsuyu “Froppy” Asui (My Hero Academia)

Froppy is a popular character from My Hero Academia who has frog-like superpowers. She’s one of the most logical and calm characters among Midoriya’s year.

Yuki Nagato
(The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Nagato is a strange being who isn’t quite human. As an interface between human and nonhuman, she is connected to a huge, superior consciousness somewhere in outer space. This affords her with many abilities like healing fatal wounds and space-time manipulation. Nagato was sent to earth to investigate a mysterious power that appeared there.

Despite seeming robotic in nature, Nagato is her own person, an individual consciousness with will and desires. She is also a good example of an INTP with her vast knowledge base, love of learning, strong introversion, and logical mindset.
