Madoka Magica MBTI

Welcome to another Anime Rant! I’m examining the MBTI types of Madoka Magica characters! This time, I’ll practice using the cognitive functions more than the letter method. Both are equally valid. I encourage conversation and welcome friendly debate, but if you’re rude about your disagreements, don’t expect the comment to be approved. The characters listed here are only from the Madoka Magica anime series and movie, but not the Magia Record side story. Alright, let’s get started.

Hitomi Shizuka: ISFJ

Hitomi is a classmate of Madoka and Sayaka. She is gentle, soft-spoken, and sort of elegant. Additionally, she’s emotionally aware of herself and others, and wishes to avoid hurting anyone. Hitomi seems to lack the typical intuitive traits, being more practical and grounded (except when hypnotized by a witch, of course).

Since this nice girl is a sensing type and a feeling type, it would make sense for her two top functions to be Fe (extraverted feeling) and Si (extraverted sensing). That means Hitomi is probably ESFJ or ISFJ. A decent argument can be made for both sides. For example, having the confidence to snatch Kamijo from Sayaka suggests she may be ESFJ. However, at the end of the day, I think ISJ is closer to correct. Hitomi is naturally quiet, and I think it was a big deal for her to find that confidence that she finally shows to Sayaka.

Homura Akemi: INFJ

Homura is a mysterious transfer student at Madoka’s school. She seems cold and aloof, but occasionally shows a more emotional side, especially with Madoka. Although it would be easy to call her self-interested, her true goals are unknown. On the rare chance that you haven’t seen Madoka Magica, I won’t spoil what her deal is exactly. Fair warning, though – I may mention a few details you technically don’t know early in the series.

There’s a lot of debate over Homura’s type, which is understandable since she’s often emotionally or mentally unstable. The two major contenders are INTJ and INFJ. I used to think Homura was the former, but now I lean toward the latter. An INFJ’s functions are: Ni, Fe, Ti, Se . So their top two are introverted feeling and extraverted feeling. Their inner world and views revolve around innovation and possibilities, and they can craft creative strategies and intuit answers without always knowing why. This sounds like Homura for sure.

Extraverted feeling isn’t a perfect fit for Homura in the sense that she doesn’t have a selfless heroic goal like saving the world. She doesn’t seem especially helpful to others. But extraverted thinking can’t be right, in my opinion, because Homura often leaves logic at the door. Think of her dangerous battle strategies. Also, she isn’t concerned with being correct all the time. At her core, Homura has an emotional nature. She is also heroic in that she wants to protect Madoka. Therefore, I believe INFJ is the right type for Homura Akemi.

Junko Kaname: ENTJ

Junko is Madoka’s mother and successful businesswoman. She’s so confident, intelligent, and good at her career that I think she could be an ENTJ. However, some also think ENFJ makes sense. Please note that both are just loose guesses based on this character’s limited screen time. I will assume Junko is ENTJ because I see her wanting to use logic and correct unreasonable thinking. As an ENTJ, her functions are: Te, Ni, Se, Fi. Junko is an excellent role model and I admire her immensely.

Kazuko Saotome: ESFP

Miss Saotome is Madoka’s homeroom teacher. She is a minor supporting character, and yet she’s memorable because of the humor she brings with her exaggerated gestures and frantic speeches. This teacher sometimes vents about her own life in class – like when she told the girls never to date a certain kind of man. As you can see, Saotome is a little strange as well a very outgoing, enthusiastic, and passionate. Her unusual and dramatic behavior lead many to assume she is an ESFP, and I fully agree. Like many ESFPs, Saotome likes being the in spotlight and expressing herself with intensity for others to see.

Kamijou Kyousuke: ISFP

Kamijo is a boy from Madoka’s school and a childhood friend of Sayaka. He was injured in an accident and temporarily lost the use of his arm, destroying his dreams of being a professional violin player. He does eventually get to pursue his dream again, but I won’t tell you exactly how that happened since it’s a spoiler.

Anyway, limited information makes it hard to be certain, but I would call Kamijou an ISFP. He’s quiet, hard to understand, and keenly in tune with his senses, with an immense appreciation for music. He’s also caring and humble, though he will not tolerate the idea of being boxed in. The ISFP is known as the artist, the adventurer, or the independent. This type’s two main functions are Fi (introverted feeling) and Se (extraverted sensing).

Kyoko Sakura: ESTP

A wild magical girl, Kyoko comes to Madoka’s city to look for witches to hunt. At least early on, she is selfish, greedy for power, and very inconsiderate of others. Naturally competitive and driven to take thrilling risks, she always wants to win. Her positive traits include confidence, adaptibility, charisma, and amazing physical skills.

I used to think Kyoko was an ENTP, and I do still see some of that in her. However, looking at the bigger picture, I think this character is actually an ESTP. She certainly seems dominated by Se (extraverted sensing), which makes her action-oriented and impulsive. It would make sense for her secondary function to be Ti (introverted thinking), since she always tries to make the world make sense through her lense of logic and fairness.

Kyubey: N/A

I’m not spending much time on trying to type Kyubey given that its species does not appear to possess individuality. If this creature did have a type, it would probably be something with a dominant Te function, such as an ENTJ. I say that because Te is associated with cold logic that leaves out the human element – much like a manipulative little Kyubey.

Madoka Kaname: INFP

Madoka is the titular protagonist of Madoka Magica. She is sweet, kind, and thoughtful. INFPs like Madoka are known as idealists, dreamers, or mediators. Their dominant function is Fi (introverted feeling), meaning they must always be in harmony with their inner values and ideals. Nothing matters more than an INFP’s personal morality, for which some would even sacrifice their lives.

The INFP’s secondary function is Ne, meaning she uses intuition to interact with the world outside. An INFP is quiet, loving, idealistic, and wants everything to be at peace. However, they are easily distressed, and their natural optimism can fade from too much strain. Madoka is a very timid INFP for most of the series, and hesitant to commit, which is a struggle for many anxious INFPs.

Mami Tomoe: ESFJ

An experienced magical girl who saves Madoka and Sayaka, Mami is an ESFJ. This type is known as consuls or caregivers. Mami exemplifies magnificently the altruistic nature, grace, and pose of a confident ESFJ. She’s used to hardship and can act tough compared to the average person of her type. But like most ESFJs, Mami is also surprisingly vulnerable, longing for someone to trust, rely on, and care for. ESFJs are also prone to love “nice things” and sensory experiences – in Mami’s case, tea, cakes, hair treatments, and luxurious living space.

Nagisa Momoe (AKA Witch Charlotte): INFP

It’s hard to know from the limited character information in Rebellion, but my guess is that Nagisa would be an INFP. She’s gentle and just wants everyone to get along.

Sayaka Miki: ENFP

Sayaka is Madoka’s best friend a central character in the series. She is outgoing, confident, and a bit of an airhead. She’s also insightful at times. Sayaka is a true romantic who deeply loves others. Unfortunately, she is very naive as well.

I actually wrote a post about how Sayaka is an ENFP and not an ESFP. If you look at the dominant cognitive functions, it’s pretty clear. ESFP’s function is Se, meaning that they interact with the world based on their senses. ENFP’s function, on the other hand, is Ne; they interact with the world based on their iNtuition. This is more like Sayaka if you ask me. Anyway, The ENFP is known as the campaigner or the champion. They are extremely lively, excitable, and caring. That’s also in line with Sayaka.

Tomohisa Kaname: ISFJ

Mr. Kaname is Madoka’s father, and by all accounts, he is a major sweetheart. He’s a stay-at-home dad who raised Madoka and now takes care of her baby brother during the day. It’s hard to be certain about his MBTI, but the stereotypical sweet house-husband would definitely be an ISFJ. Their functions are Si, Fe, Ti, Ne. Their two leading traits are therefore introverted sensing and extraverted feeling, leading to their loving and cautious nature.

  1. I think I vary in type depending on situations but predominantly am INFP
( I 55% likely, N 60% likely F 75% and P 51% likely) In reality I think I am way more I , but simply having friends counts towards E in most tests and I speak my mind.

I am less definable than most who took this test with me though! But I am happy my personality is colour coded pink in this show xD, I do relate to Madoka the most.
Most of my friends are predominantly infp’s as well, though I am really drawn in to ESFP’s as well. Mami s my favourite Madoka char though.
