Seiyuu Series: Mamoru Miyano

Welcome. Thanks for joining me! Today at Anime Rants, we are focusing on Mamoru Miyano, a very well-known seiyuu (Japanese voice-actor). As usual, first I’ll list some of this actor’s roles in anime. Then I will add my notes and thoughts, including my favorite role. Mr. Miyano has been in a large number of roles, and so for today, I picked only about 20 of them. Let’s begin.

Roles

Chrollo Lucifer (Hunter x Hunter)

Death The Kid (Soul Eater)

Ertegun (Carole and Tuesday)

Gakushuu Asano (Assassination Classroom)

(Chrollo)

Gilthunder (Nanatsu no Taizai)

Kei Nagai (Ajin)

Kiba (Wolf’s Rain)

Koutarou Tatsumi (Zombieland Saga)

(Koutarou Tastumi)

Light Yagami (Death Note)

Ling Yao (FMA: Brotherhood)

Masaomi Kida (Durarara)

Osamu Dazai (Bungou Stray Dogs)

(Light)

Rei Niiboshi (Sarazanmai)

Rin Matsuoka (Free!)

Rintarou Okabe (Steins;Gate)

Setsuna F Seiei (Gundam 00)

(Rin)

Shuu Tsukiyama (Tokyo Ghoul)

Tamaki Suoh (Ouran Highschool Host club)

Zero Kiryuu (Vampire Knight)

(Tsukiyama)

Notes

Mamoru Miyano has won acclaim far and wide with his voice-acting talent. He played many memorable and some truly historical roles in anime, such as Light, Okabe, and Death The Kid. I have to question his judgement for playing the lead role in King’s Game recently, but at least it shows he’s still in the acting arena. He puts his all into every role, and you can tell.

Mr. Miyano has a charming voice and, in many roles, gives off a vibe of “princely.” His voice can be calm and relaxed like Chrollo, energetic and humorous like Dazai, or almost completely mad like Tsukiyama. Those seem to be his three major character types, though there are a few roles more nuanced like Ling Yao and Kei Nagai, some of my favorites.

First Time Hearing

One of the first three anime I watched was Ouran Highschool Host Club, and I watched it back-to-back dub and sub. So this is probably where I first heard his voice. Then again, it might have been Kiba in Wolf’s Rain. I don’t exactly remember. Anyway, Tamaki is a character with many faults that aren’t really addressed by the show, such as possessiveness and sexism. But he has a good heart, and tries to adjust to things in his own way, especially if it makes others happy. Tamaki’s voice is heavy on the humorous overreactions, as well as the charming prince voice.

Favorite Role

This choice is obvious. Hands down, Okabe in Steins;Gate. Though many western viewers prefer the English Dub of Steins;Gate, I MUCH prefer the Japanese version of all the characters. Most of all, I love Miyano’s performance as Okabe. There’s so much pure heart in this character, as well as madness, determination, grief, love, and enthusiasm. Mr. Miyano pulls this off amazingly. I can’t imagine anyone else capturing the geeky, crazy, and yet sweet Rintarou Okabe.

Thank you immensely for reading my work today. Come back next week for another entry in the seiyuu series! Sayonara~
