Welcome! Today at Anime Rants, we’re taking look at Kouki Uchiyama, a talented Seiyuu (Japanese voice-actor). Listed below are sixteen noteworthy roles that Uchiyama has played. Afterward, I’ll share my notes about this seiyuu, including the first time I heard his voice, and which role is my favorite. Let’s dive right in.
Akira Fudou (Devilman: Crybaby)
Ikuya Kirishima (Free! Dive To The Future)
Kei Tsukishima (Haikyuu!)
Meruem (Hunter x Hunter)
Midnight (Fairy Tail)
Raku Ichijou (Nisekoi)
Ruth (The Ancient Magus’ Bride)
Soul Eater Evans (Soul Eater)
Tomura Shigaraki (My Hero Academia)
Tooi Kuji (Sarazanmai)
Ulgar Zweig (Kanata no Astra)
Yoshino Takigawa (Blast of Tempest)
Yuri Plisetsky (Yuri on Ice!)
Yuu Otosaka (Charlotte)
Yuuki Natsuno (Shiki)
Zakuro Oshigiri (The Ones Within)
Kouki Uchiyama has an unforgettable voice. It’s deep and dry with a just little bit of a natural rasp. Compared to some seiyuu, it’s easy for me recognize Uchiyama regardless of his role. This means he has a bit less skill with doing different kinds of voices. His main strength is putting heart into the characters he plays. His acting, especially for dramatic scenes, is always powerful both vocally and emotionally. While I wouldn’t say Uchiyama is typecast, he does have a special niche of playing antagonists or characters with antagonistic attitudes.
First Time Hearing
The first time I heard the voice of Kouki Uchiyama was when I watched Blast of Tempest in 2013. Well, it was either that or Raku from Nisekoi. But Blast of Tempest is the one I remember best. Uchiyama plays the main character, Yoshino Takigawa. He does a really impressive job. Yoshino is quiet, melancholy, and somewhat emotionally detached. He is also decisive, practical, and logical, with good common sense. Uchiyama captures this all so well with his voice. For the scene where Yoshino cries in episode 14, I was stunned by the performance.
Among my top favorite roles are Yuuki Natsuno, Akira, and Yoshino. But my number one favorite could be none other than Meruem from Hunter x Hunter’s famous Chimera Ant Arc. The subtlest of expression changes for this important character are perfectly acted by Kouki Uchiyama. Out of all the roles I’ve heard, this is the one that sounded like the most like the actor actually was the character he was voicing. I can’t say enough how much I was impressed by the seiyuu behind the voice of Meruem.
With that, I say thank you for reading, and bid you a good day. See you next time!
